Causes and Risk Factors
Insulin resistance:-- the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin.
Being overweight or obese:-- excess fat around the abdominal area is a big risk factor.
Lack of physical activity:-- when a person does not exercise much, it makes them resistant to insulin.
Family history:-- Family history:-- if a person’s relatives have diabetes, the risk of developing it increases.
Age:-- after the age of 45, the risk of developing diabetes increases, but it can occur at any age.
Other health conditions:-- polycystic ovary syndrome, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and gestational diabetes.
Possible Treatments for Type 2 Diabetes
What you want to achieve with treatment:-- Manage blood sugar levels, prevent complications, and make you feel better.
Lifestyle Changes
Healthy Diet:-- eat more vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and less sugar and refined carbohydrates.
Regular Exercise:-- At least 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise to help your body use insulin.
Lose Weight if Needed:-- Even a small amount of weight loss can help lower blood sugar and reduce the need for medications.
Type 2 Diabetes Medication, Both Oral and Other
A. Metformin First choice
What it does:- It lowers the amount of sugar produced by the liver and improves the body's utilization of insulin.
Examples:- Glycoheal Tablet (Generic Metformin), Bigomet (Metformin).
Usual start dose:- 500 mg once or twice daily, doctor may raise it slowly.
B. Combination medications
Why is it used? Because metformin is insufficient to regulate blood sugar levels.
Normal combinations:
Glimepiride + Metformin:-- e.g., Glycoheal (Glimepiride 1 mg + Metformin 500 mg SR); trade name Amaryl M.
Gliclazide MR:--also known as Glycitop MR (trade name Diamicron), helps in the pancreas's increased production of insulin.
Pioglitazone + Metformin:--such as Pioglit MF Forte (marketed under the name Actoplus Met), enhances the action of insulin.
Imeglimin:-- such as Imeglyn 500, is a more recent medication that aids in the release and action of insulin.
C. GLP‑1 Receptor Agonists Injection
What they do:--lower blood sugar and often help with weight loss.
Example:-- Ozempic (Semaglutide).
Who can take them:-- Those who need to lose weight, have heart risk, or do not respond well to oral medications.
D. Insulin Therapy
If needed:-- If tablets are not sufficient or if blood sugar levels are very high.
Examples:-- Novorapid (Insulin Aspart), Humalog (Insulin Lispro), Levemir (Insulin Detemir).
Types:-- short‑acting, rapid‑acting, long‑acting depending on requirement.
