A hot tub is meant to be a place of relaxation, not a chemistry lab—but keeping the water clean, safe, and comfortable does require a handful of essential chemicals. The good news is you don’t need dozens of products. With a basic understanding of a few key items, you can maintain crystal-clear water without overcomplicating things.

Sanitizer: The Most Important Chemical
If you only prioritize one thing, make it your sanitizer. This is what keeps your hot tub water free from harmful bacteria and contaminants. The two most common options are chlorine and bromine. Chlorine works quickly and is widely available, while bromine is more stable at higher temperatures, making it a popular choice for hot tubs. Either option works well—it mostly comes down to personal preference.

pH Balancers: Keeping Water Comfortable
Your hot tub water should have a pH level between 7.2 and 7.8. If it’s too low, the water becomes acidic and can irritate your skin and damage equipment. If it’s too high, it can cause cloudy water and reduce the effectiveness of your sanitizer. That’s where pH ...
... increasers and decreasers come in. These simple chemicals help you fine-tune the balance so your water feels comfortable and stays clean.

Alkalinity Increaser: The Stabilizer
Total alkalinity acts like a buffer for your pH level. If alkalinity is off, your pH will constantly fluctuate, making maintenance frustrating. An alkalinity increaser (usually sodium bicarbonate) helps keep things stable. Ideally, alkalinity should sit between 80 and 120 ppm. Once it’s in range, your pH becomes much easier to control.

Shock Treatment: Deep Cleaning Boost
Even with regular sanitizer use, contaminants like body oils, sweat, and lotions build up over time. Shock treatments oxidize these unwanted substances and refresh your water. You typically use shock once a week or after heavy use. There are chlorine-based and non-chlorine shock options, both effective for routine maintenance.

Calcium Hardness Adjuster: Protecting Equipment
Calcium hardness refers to the amount of dissolved calcium in your water. If it’s too low, the water can become corrosive and damage your hot tub’s components. If it’s too high, you may see scale buildup. A calcium hardness increaser helps maintain the ideal range, usually between 150 and 250 ppm.

Optional but Helpful Add-ons
While not strictly necessary, a few extra products can make maintenance easier. Clarifiers help small particles clump together so your filter can remove them more effectively. Defoamers quickly eliminate foam caused by soaps or lotions. Enzyme-based cleaners can also break down organic waste, reducing the load on your sanitizer.

Keep It Simple
Many new hot tub owners make the mistake of buying too many products at once. In reality, you can manage your hot tub with just a sanitizer, pH balancers, alkalinity increaser, shock treatment, and calcium adjuster. Everything else is optional.

Regular testing is just as important as the chemicals themselves. Test your water a few times a week and adjust as needed. Once you get into a routine, hot tub maintenance becomes quick and straightforward.

In the end, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s consistency. With the right core chemicals and a simple maintenance routine, your hot tub will stay clean, safe, and ready whenever you need a relaxing soak.
