... program was created to help reduce this financial burden. Similar to a homestead exemption in other states, STAR now primarily functions as a tax credit or rebate. This means eligible homeowners receive a payment either via direct deposit or check to help offset school tax costs. However, homeowners who had an exemption in place prior to 2016 may continue with that benefit, while newer homeowners must opt for the credit.
There are two types of STAR programs:
The first is Basic STAR, comparable to a standard homestead exemption. It is available to homeowners of all ages with an annual income below $500,000.
The second is Enhanced STAR, designed for homeowners aged 65 or older with a combined income under $107,300. This income limit will increase to $110,750 for the 2026–27 school year.
• Basic STAR Benefits: Typically provides a tax credit ranging from $300 to $500 and reduces the taxable value of a home by $30,000
• Enhanced STAR Benefits: Usually offers a tax credit between $800 and $1,500 and reduces taxable value by $86,000
