A Market Doubling in Size
Every hyperscale facility, colocation campus, and enterprise data center shares one non-negotiable requirement: power must never fail. Generators are the last line of defense when the grid fails, and as data centers multiply in size, number, and criticality, the market for backup generation is growing at pace. The global data center generator market, valued at $8.43 billion in 2024, is projected to reach $19.66 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 15.15%.
What is driving this growth goes well beyond simple capacity expansion. The sector is navigating a fundamental tension between rising power demand and mounting pressure to decarbonize, and that tension is producing some of the most meaningful innovation the generator industry has seen in decades.

This drop-in compatibility is what makes HVO so compelling for data center operators. Transitioning to lower-carbon backup power typically involves expensive infrastructure changes or long lead times for new equipment. HVO sidesteps both those barriers, allowing operators to significantly reduce their Scope 1 emissions from backup generation immediately and affordably.
Adoption is already substantial and growing. Compass Datacenters, Vantage Data Centers, Digital Realty, STACK Infrastructure, AWS, and ST Telemedia Global Data Centres are among the operators that have either deployed or are actively testing HVO fuel. ST Telemedia became the first operator in Singapore to deploy HVO for backup generators in June 2024. Khazna Data Centers in the Middle East has committed to switching its entire portfolio to HVO, with all new generators specified as HVO-capable from the outset.
In 2024, AVK sold over 500 MTU generators powered by HVO to the data center sector through its partnership with the Power Systems division of Rolls-Royce, delivering nearly 1.3 gigawatts of standby capacity. These numbers reflect a market transition that is well underway.

Intelligent Power Management: Software Takes Control
The shift toward AI-driven and software-defined power infrastructure is changing how generators are monitored, maintained, and optimized. Data Center Infrastructure Management software, used by platforms including Schneider Electric's EcoStruxure, Delta Power Solutions' InfraSuite Manager, and Nlyte Software, is enabling real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance alerts, and automated load management across entire generator fleets.
For data center operators managing hundreds of megawatts across multiple sites, the ability to track generator health, receive early warnings of potential failures, and automate testing and maintenance scheduling is directly reducing operational risk and extending equipment lifespans. In markets like Brazil, where approximately 63% of companies already use AI-powered data and analytics solutions, these intelligent systems are becoming standard operational tools rather than premium add-ons.
The move toward software-defined power infrastructure reflects a broader pattern across the data center industry: automation and intelligence are improving outcomes at every layer of the technology stack, and power is no exception.

Capacity Requirements Growing With Hyperscale Demand
Generator capacity specifications are shifting upward as hyperscale and large colocation facilities grow in scale. While the 1.5 MW to 3 MW range remains the most commonly deployed segment, demand for generators rated at 3 MW and above is rising strongly, driven by the power density requirements of hyperscale campuses and AI-focused facilities.
Equinix's deployment of a 4,000 kVA diesel generator in a 2N configuration at its SY9x facility in Sydney illustrates the scale of backup infrastructure that modern facilities require. As AI workloads push power consumption per rack higher, the generator capacity required to maintain full facility uptime during a grid outage grows proportionally.
Advanced gas and bi-fuel generators are also gaining traction, allowing facilities to run on natural gas, hydrogen blends, or combinations of fuels, reducing carbon intensity while maintaining the reliability standards that data center operations demand.

Sustainability and Renewables Reshaping the Landscape
Beyond HVO and gas alternatives, data center operators are integrating renewable energy procurement into their broader power strategies. Long-term Power Purchase Agreements with solar, wind, and hydropower providers are enabling operators to reduce the carbon intensity of their grid consumption while generators provide clean-fuel backup capacity.
Equinix's 10-year PPA with French renewable developer Neoen, signed in November 2024 to procure 53 megawatts of solar power for its Italian facilities, is one example of how PPAs are becoming a standard tool for operators committed to net-zero targets. Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have all made public commitments to reach net-zero carbon emissions, and their procurement decisions are influencing generator fuel choices and specifications across the industry.

Regional Dynamics
The United States dominates the Americas region with over 50.5% of market share, supported by the world's largest concentration of data center capacity. Canada and Brazil are growing markets within the region, with Mexico, Chile, and Colombia emerging as significant future destinations.
In Europe, Germany leads, followed by the United Kingdom, France, and Norway, with a growing cluster of markets including Italy, Spain, Poland, and Sweden. European operators are among the most active adopters of HVO and low-carbon generator alternatives, driven by stringent EU emissions regulations and strong corporate sustainability commitments.
The Middle East and APAC markets continue to rely more heavily on conventional diesel, reflecting less stringent emissions regulations in some locations and greater availability of traditional fuel infrastructure. However, the adoption of HVO and gas alternatives is growing steadily even in these regions as sustainability commitments from global operators cascade through their international portfolios.

The Road Ahead
The data center generator market is in the middle of a technology and fuel transition that will define how the industry manages backup power for the rest of this decade. HVO adoption is accelerating, intelligent power management is becoming standard, generator capacities are scaling up with hyperscale demand, and the competitive landscape is being reshaped by operators who are treating sustainability not as a compliance obligation but as a strategic priority.
For generator manufacturers, the challenge and the opportunity are the same: deliver reliable, high-capacity backup power that meets the world's most demanding operational standards, while progressively reducing the carbon cost of keeping the lights on.
