Like with all US Lottery games, playing the Powerball isn't by any means difficult, but if you want to make the most of your experience and avoid a series of bad surprises, it is strongly recommendable that you adhere to the five fundamental lottery playing rules described below.

1 - Plan Your Actions in Advance

If you want to avoid waiting in interminable lines to get your Powerball Lottery tickets, consider buying them at least a day (preferably two) before the draw. Buying your tickets early not only allows you to save a lot of time, but also helps ward off the inconvenience and frustration of queuing or having to beat the ticket sales deadline.

2 - Leave Your Lottery Tickets in a Safe Spot

Strange and unlikely as it may seem, several US lottery jackpots worth millions of dollars have never been collected simply because the rightful prizewinners somehow managed to lose or misplace their tickets. To avoid being the main protagonist in such an ironical twist of events, make sure you stick religiously by the second fundamental rule, which is to have a safe and easy to remember hiding ...
... place for your lottery tickets.

3 - Check Lottery Results on a Weekly Basis

What's probably even worse than misplacing your ticket is never knowing you were a Powerball Lottery winner in the first place. While in the scenario described above you may still have a chance at finding your winning ticket and claiming your prize eventually, in the second course of events you are practically walking right by the chance of a lifetime without even realizing it. This is why it is very important to make a habit of checking lottery results, regardless whether you look for them in newspapers, on teletext or on a dedicated website. Since finding and checking past winning numbers shouldn't take you more than a few minutes, there really is no good excuse for you not to do this every week.

4 - Claim Your Prizes without Delay

If you find out that you are the winner of a Powerball Lottery prize, you should hurry up and make your claim before the set deadline expires. Although you generally have several months at your disposal to claim your winnings, there are also numerous time-consuming formalities to take care of, so it is for the best to collect as soon as possible. Moreover, while smaller Powerball Lottery prizes can be collected directly from any local lottery retailer, sizeable prizes can only be claimed from a National Lottery Post Office or regional lottery office, as instructed on the verso-side of your ticket.

5 - Avoid Spreading out the Word about You Winning the Lottery

All major winners of US lottery games can choose that their personal information not be disclosed in the media. While this decision is of course entirely yours to make, in most situations you should nevertheless consider keeping your new-won lottery prize a secret. If you want to avoid drawing unnecessary attention onto yourself and becoming an attractive target for burglars, be careful whom you talk to and how much information you give them.
