PRK and LASIK are two of the most well-known forms of laser vision correction available today. Both procedures are designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses and contact lenses by reshaping the cornea. While they share the same goal, the way they are performed and the recovery experience can differ in important ways.

Laser vision correction works by changing the shape of the cornea so that light entering the eye focuses properly on the retina. When the cornea is slightly irregular, it can cause nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. By reshaping this clear front surface of the eye, both PRK and LASIK improve how clearly you see.

LASIK, which stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, involves creating a thin flap in the outer layer of the cornea. This flap is gently lifted, and a laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue. The flap is then repositioned, where it naturally adheres without stitches.

PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, does not involve creating a corneal flap. Instead, the outer layer of the cornea, known as the epithelium, is carefully removed to allow the laser ...
... to reshape the cornea directly. Over the following days, the epithelium naturally regenerates as part of the healing process.

One of the main differences between the two procedures is recovery time. LASIK typically offers faster visual recovery. Many patients notice improved vision within 24 to 48 hours and are able to return to normal activities relatively quickly. PRK, on the other hand, generally involves a longer recovery period because the surface layer of the cornea must regrow.

During PRK recovery, it is common to experience mild discomfort, light sensitivity, and blurry vision for several days. A protective contact lens is often placed on the eye to support healing. With LASIK, discomfort is usually minimal, and most patients describe only mild dryness or irritation during the early healing stage.

Both PRK and LASIK are highly effective at treating nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Long-term results are very similar, and both procedures have high patient satisfaction rates. The choice often comes down to corneal thickness, lifestyle considerations, and personal preferences.

Patients with thinner corneas may be better candidates for PRK. Since LASIK requires the creation of a flap, adequate corneal thickness is necessary to ensure structural stability. PRK preserves more corneal tissue, making it a safer option for certain individuals.

Lifestyle can also influence the decision. People who participate in contact sports or activities with a higher risk of eye trauma may prefer PRK because it does not involve a flap. Although LASIK flaps are secure once healed, avoiding a flap altogether can provide added peace of mind.

The procedure time for both surgeries is relatively short. The laser portion typically lasts less than a minute per eye. Numbing eye drops are used to keep patients comfortable, and most people are awake during the procedure but feel little to no pain.

Vision after LASIK often stabilizes quickly, allowing many patients to drive and return to work within a day or two. PRK patients may need a few more days before vision becomes clear enough for certain activities. However, once healing is complete, visual outcomes are comparable.

Dry eye symptoms can occur after either procedure, though they are often temporary. Your eye surgeon will evaluate your tear production and overall eye health before recommending a treatment option. Proper preoperative screening plays a critical role in achieving the best results.

Both procedures carry some risks, including infection, glare, halos, or undercorrection. Serious complications are rare when surgery is performed by an experienced professional. A thorough consultation helps set realistic expectations and ensures you understand the benefits and potential risks.

Age and prescription stability are also important factors. Ideal candidates are typically over 18 years old with a stable prescription for at least a year. Good overall eye health and realistic expectations contribute to successful outcomes.

Cost can vary depending on technology, surgeon experience, and geographic location. Because laser vision correction is considered elective, it is usually not covered by insurance. Many practices offer financing options to make the procedure more accessible.

When deciding between PRK and LASIK, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Both procedures are safe, proven, and effective methods of laser vision correction. A personalized evaluation will determine which approach best matches your eye structure, lifestyle, and visual goals.

Understanding the similarities and differences between PRK and LASIK can help you make a confident choice. By discussing your needs and expectations with an eye care professional, you can select the laser vision correction procedure that suits you best and move closer to life with clearer vision.
