Working With Heat Shrink Straight Through Joints On Live Sites

I’ve done these joints in trenches, basements, and open yards with wind blowing straight into the joint kit. First thing you learn is surface prep matters more than anything else. If the insulation isn’t cleaned properly, no amount of heating will save the joint later. I’ve seen joints fail not because of heat shrink quality, but because the guy before lunch rushed the cleaning step.

The joint body shrinks fine if the torch work is even. Uneven heat is where problems start. You see small wrinkles or trapped air that you think will settle. They don’t. After energization, those spots become warm first.

Cable cutting looks basic but alignment is where experience shows. If the cores are not straight, the stress control never sits correctly. Environmental Conditions Nobody Talks About

Humidity affects cooling time. You think the joint has settled, but internally it’s still warm. Moving the cable too soon causes micro gaps. I always give it more time than the kit instructions say, especially in summer.

After completing the joint or termination, visual inspection is not enough. I run my hand slowly once it cools. You can feel uneven shrinkage or soft spots. That’s a warning.

Megger testing usually passes even with small issues. That doesn’t mean the joint is perfect. Real problems show after the load. That’s why I prefer doing terminations early in the day, so the cable can sit before energization.

Common Mistakes Seen on Site

One mistake is cutting too much insulation in excitement. You can’t add it back. Another is mixing up the tube sequence. Once heat is applied, there is no undo.

In Heat Shrink Termination, I’ve seen people forget to slide components before crimping lugs. Everyone has done it once. After that, you never forget again.

Long-Term Performance Observations
