Cannes To Calais: The Best Of France

Every summer, thousands of Brits make their annual pilgrimage to France. Whilst a jokey rivalry with our nearest European neighbours still exists, the fact is the many of us simply cannot help but fall in love with the country, inspired by its beautiful countryside, fabulous culture and, without a doubt, its mouth-watering cuisine.
Like the Italians and the Spaniards, many French people have mastered the art of enjoying life. Pleasure is more important than work. Things are not quite so rushed on the other side of La Manche. People take the time enjoy fine food and good wine. They are experts in the arts of relaxation. They know when to take a day off.
So for all you French travel enthusiasts out there, here''s a look at some of the most popular visitor destinations across this pleasure loving country:
For a spot of sheer luxury, head to the coastal city of Cannes. Famous for its film festival, this town does everything to deserve its star-studded reputation.
Carcassonne is another French gem. It provides a glimpse of medieval France, with many of its buildings, such is the historic fortress, built ...
... upon ruins that predate Christianity. In the centre of the town, Ville de Carcassone ? the famous medieval castle ? stands tall. This is a fabulous historic monument that continues to fascinate and inspire children, adults, writers, painters and historians alike. Visit out of season to see it at its best.
Home of beloved French painter C?zanne, Aix en Provence is a wonderful destination for all culture vultures. There are a number of cultural festivals in the city throughout the year, celebrating theatre, dance and the fine arts. If you''d like to experience one, check out the Aix en Provence tourism website for full dates and details.
The small country town of Cahors offers up some of the finest cuisine in the country. It is proud home of the delicious French dessert, Tarte Tatin, which is often found on restaurant menus accompanied by the traditional prune ice cream. Confit of duck is also a popular local speciality. Head to the smaller, bistro-style eateries, always packed with locals at lunchtime (the main meal of the day in this part of France), ask for the set menu and simply wait and see what delights will appear.
Cahors, in the Lot Region, offers up some of France''s most delicious food. From confit of duck to Tarte Tatin, this is the place to go to experience gastronomical heaven. It is interesting to note that this is the area of France that consumes the most fat and the most sugar yet suffers from the lowest rates of heart disease and has some of the healthiest people in the country. Live like a local and stock up at lunch and simply enjoy some bread, cheese and salad for dinner.
This is the perfect destination for a weekend break or a month long trip, providing something for everyone and charm by the bucketful.
