Modern scientists envision the universe as something that is purely chaotic or accidental. However, the ancient Vedic texts suggest a different story, in which we see that the universe was formed from divine intelligence and wisdom. These texts portray a subtle principle or essence called Ṛta being responsible for the creation of the universe. It is also deeply connected to Dharma and Karma, where Dharma interpreted cosmic order into ethical and social responsibility. Karma went on to explain how one’s actions produce outcomes and consequences directly and predictably.

The Ṛta is conspicuously discussed in the Rig Veda. It defines a cosmic law that conserves harmony and balance across all dimensions and levels of existence. This journey starts from the motion of the stars and planets to the ethical lives of human beings. While being an early outlook or philosophy, the concept of Ṛta offers a treasured outlook into the way our universe maintains balance across all levels of being. Essentially, Ṛta is a law of inherent order. It is intertwined into the fabric of the cosmos and reality itself. This is very different ...
... from what we understand as law, something that is imposed on our lives from the outside.

The Vedic seers distinguished that the universe follows a seamless pattern. Hence, it conserves all kinds of life forms or beings in the creation. For instance, the seasons come and go in repetitive and likely patterns, the sun rises and sets every day, and natural life reveals cyclically through birth, growth, passing, and decay. Such forms and motions of nature were not seen as haphazard, mechanical processes but as powerful expressions of Ṛta, the cosmic force that governs everything in the universe, making sure that eternal continuity is preserved according to the moral truth of existence.

Truthfulness, balance, and restraint are certain qualities that not only give balance and meaning to social life but also seamlessly align human existence with the deeper elements of the cosmos. One of the most emotional and powerful insights of Ṛta is that it does not distinguish between natural law and ethical or moral law. According to this way of life, both nature and human behavior are ruled by the same cosmic order. Hence, a lie or a distortion of truth was not just dangerous because it acted as a marker of social disharmony, but it also interrupted the universal harmony. It is for this reason that the Vedic texts closely connected Ṛta with authenticity and truth.

The Vedic gods and goddesses were not creators of Ṛta; they were responsible as its custodians and preservers. Ṛta also had a very important role to play in shaping the Vedic rituals. Rituals were not simply a way to manipulate nature or please the gods arbitrarily. They served as acts of synchronization. Human beings could align themselves with the universal and cosmic rhythms. The process requires performing specific rituals at the correct times. Uttering precise chants and practicing disciplined intention help meet the right goals. Once these rituals and inner intention aligned with Ṛta, it was possible to restore harmony between the human world and the cosmic realms. Ṛta also paved the way for concepts like Dharma and Karma to take form at later stages.
