It’s late on a Friday night, or you are about to leave for a wedding, and suddenly—CRACK. You bit down on something hard. Or maybe you woke up at 2 AM with a throbbing toothache that no amount of clove oil is fixing.
Panic sets in. Is the dentist open? Can I wait until Monday? What do I do with this broken piece of tooth?
First, take a deep breath.
At 32 Smiles, we handle dental emergencies in Pune every single week. Whether you are in Koregaon Park or Shivaji Nagar, we are here to help.
If you are reading this in pain, skip the intro. Here is your immediate action plan for the most common dental disasters.
1. The Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsion)
If a permanent tooth has been knocked out (due to a fall or sports injury), we can often save it if you act fast.
DO: Pick it up by the crown (the white chewing part), NOT the root.
DO: Rinse it gently with water if it’s dirty. Do not scrub it.
THE TRICK: If possible, put the tooth back in the socket and bite down gently on a handkerchief to hold it in place.
ALTERNATIVE: If you can't put it back, drop the tooth in a cup ...
... of cold milk or your own saliva. Do not put it in water (water can damage the root cells).
ACTION: Get to our clinic immediately. Time is the enemy here.
2. The Unbearable Toothache
If the pain is sharp, throbbing, or keeping you awake, it could be an infection or an abscess.
DO: Floss gently around the tooth to ensure no food is stuck (sometimes a piece of popcorn hull can cause massive pain).
DO: Use a cold compress (ice pack) on your cheek to reduce swelling.
DON'T: Do not put aspirin or painkillers directly on the gum. This causes chemical burns. Swallow the medication as directed.
ACTION: Call us. An infection will not go away on its own; it needs antibiotics or a root canal to stop the pressure.
3. The Lost Invisalign Aligner
You took your aligners out at a restaurant in Balewadi High Street, wrapped them in a napkin, and the waiter threw them away. It happens more often than you think!
DON'T: Don't panic. Your teeth won't shift back to zero overnight.
DO: Put your previous set of aligners back in. If you were on Tray #10, go back to Tray #9. This will hold your teeth in place and prevent relapse.
ACTION: Call us to order a replacement tray. Do not just wait for two weeks with nothing on your teeth.
4. The Broken/Chipped Tooth
You bit into a hard walnut or fell down.
DO: Rinse your mouth with warm water.
DO: If there is bleeding, apply pressure with a clean gauze for 10 minutes.
DO: Find the broken piece if you can—sometimes we can bond it back.
ACTION: See us as soon as possible. Even if it doesn't hurt, the sharp edge can cut your tongue, and the exposed inner tooth is vulnerable to infection.
Why 32 Smiles for Emergencies?
When you are in pain, you don't want to hear "Come back next Tuesday."
