Handling Big Feelings: How Preschools Help Children Manage Emotions & Behaviour
Young children experience a range of emotions on any given day, including joy, excitement, fear, anger, sadness, and others, but often lack the skills for managing those emotions effectively. As for toddlers and preschoolers, some of those emotions might be overwhelming enough for them to result in temper tantrums, shyness, or negative behaviour. It is at this point that preschools come into play. Apart from intellectual knowledge, preschools present a nurturing setting that equips children with how to effectively realise their emotional expressions and overcome negative behaviour from a tender age.
Understanding Big Feelings in Early Childhood
Preschool age marks an important emotional development milestone for children as they begin to comprehend their emotions. Children learn about the different emotions they experience, the reasons for which they feel a particular way, how to react to those emotions, and how to compose themselves during difficult situations. One of the most significant ways to assist children in dealing with their emotions is to teach them to identify the emotions they feel. Preschools provide children with the facility to do so using tools like emotion charts, pictures, emotion-stories books, etc. Children learn to use words such as “happy,” “sad,” “angry,” “afraid,” “excited,” or “frustrated” to convey their feelings. When children know how to put their emotions into words, they tend to behave less negatively, as they no longer act on their emotions.
Learning Through Play, Stories & Role-Play
Playing is one of the most effective methods that helps children understand emotions. By role-playing, playing, or storytelling, children are able to understand that different characters feel a certain way when faced with a certain situation, respond to it with kindness, and deal with a conflict in a calm manner. Children are able to experience emotional reactions to a situation when they act out a scenario that occurs in their everyday life, all of which happens in a safe, supportive.
Guiding Behaviour with Patience & Positive Reinforcement
Instead of being punitive in their approach, preschools follow gentle guidance and positive reinforcement. The teachers exhibit calm behaviour, discuss consequences in a caring manner, praise children for good behaviour, and considerately redirect children when they behave negatively. As children internalise this way of being taught, they learn not only about when certain behaviours are acceptable but also about how their behaviour affects others.
Building Emotional Intelligence for Life
By laying a good foundation regarding emotional regulation and control, children from a young age build confidence, empathy, and a strong ability to deal with different situations. These skills are not limited to a classroom setting but also apply to developing and maintaining relationships and learning successfully throughout life. If a positive start is made, they will progress towards developing well-rounded and emotionally competent people.
One of the most valuable things that early education can provide in this regard is helping children understand, recognise, and regulate their large emotions. When preschool is nurturing, it means the child is taught to recognise the fact that feelings are normal, controllable, and can be expressed safely, at the same time teaching them appropriate behavioural responses.
