How To Buy Corporate Bonds In India: A Practical Guide
When I speak to investors who are exploring fixed income, I often notice a familiar pattern: most people understand fixed deposits well, but feel uncertain about how to actually purchase corporate bonds. The good news is that buying them has become far more accessible than it was a decade ago—provided I follow a disciplined process and focus on the right checks.
1) I start by defining the “why” and the time horizon
Before I pick any bond, I decide what I want it to do in my portfolio. Am I looking for predictable cash flows, a specific maturity date, or a yield pick-up over bank deposits? Corporate bonds come with different coupon structures (fixed, floating, cumulative) and maturities, so my holding period matters. If I may need liquidity, I also think about how easy it will be to sell the bond before maturity.
2) I shortlist issuers using credit quality, not just yield
A higher yield ...
... is not a free lunch—it often reflects higher risk. My first filter is the issuer’s credit profile and the bond’s credit rating. I look at the rating and try to understand what supports it: business model, leverage, cash flows, and refinancing needs. I also check whether the bond is secured or unsecured, and where it stands in the repayment hierarchy.
3) I read the instrument terms like a checklist
For every shortlisted bond, I review:
ISIN and series details (to avoid confusion between similar issues)
Coupon rate and payment frequency (monthly/quarterly/annual)
Maturity date, call/put options, and any step-up/step-down features
Minimum investment/lot size and whether the bond is listed
YTM vs coupon (especially important if I’m buying at a premium/discount)
This step prevents surprises later—particularly around early redemption clauses and cash-flow timing.
4) I use the right route to purchase
In practice, I can buy corporate bonds through platforms or intermediaries that provide access to listed and eligible bond inventories. The bond is typically credited to my demat account, and settlement happens in a defined cycle similar to other market securities. If I don’t have demat, I arrange it first—because holding bonds in demat simplifies tracking, corporate actions, and reporting.
5) I compare them properly with deposits
Many investors also ask me: “What Are Corporate Fixed Deposits” and how do they differ from bonds? I explain it simply: a corporate FD is a deposit placed with a company at a fixed rate for a fixed tenure, while a bond is a marketable security (often listed) that may offer tradability and price discovery. Corporate FDs can be easier to understand, but they are typically not traded on exchanges. Bonds, on the other hand, may allow an exit route—though liquidity depends on the specific bond and market conditions.
6) I factor in taxation and real returns
Tax treatment can change the net outcome materially. I account for taxation on interest income and any capital gains if I sell before maturity. I also compare the post-tax return with alternatives rather than relying only on headline yields.
7) I size positions and diversify
Even when I like an issuer, I avoid concentration. I diversify across issuers, sectors, and maturity buckets so that one credit event does not derail the entire allocation.
In summary: buying corporate bonds in India is not difficult, but it rewards methodical evaluation. When I focus on credit quality, instrument terms, and portfolio fit—rather than chasing the highest yield—I am far more likely to use bonds as they are meant to be used: a steady, risk-aware building block in a long-term plan.
