Do not assume simply because you snared a great price on cheap vacation packages or discount hotel rooms, that you are going to enjoy your hotel. Hotel employees can significantly impact the quality of your stay. These employees are under a lot of pressure these days with hotels reducing staff, freezing salaries and doing away with perks for its workers.

Hotel clerks, particularly front desk employees, wield a great deal of power. They know what rooms are best, be they rooms with great views, other amenities, and which rooms are least desirable.

The following are some ways vindictive hotel employees get back at difficult hotel guests:

Guests who are rude, drunk, or obnoxious may be told that their room is not ready when they check in, regardless of the actual state of the room.

Guests who are particularly annoying may find that the hotel clerk placed a huge hold on their credit cards making those cards unusable for any other purchases.

Assigning guests to the least desirable rooms often happens to someone acting rude or looking like they do not belong ...
... in the hotel.

There are stories of guests complaining during their visit and then being besieged by obscene phone calls when they return home.

Hotel employees have also been known to add charges to guests' bills after they check out for things such as late charges, Internet charges, and/or Minibar or pay-per-view movies.

The single best way to avoid creating a vindictive hotel employee who will go out of his way to make your life miserable is to be nice. If you run into a difficult hotel clerk, try to empathize and cheer the person up. Also, if you need to complain about a problem it is smart to do so in person, vs. over the phone, maintaining a positive attitude. It usually is not smart to check into a five star hotel in jeans and a tee shirt. You should always travel with multiple credit cards, or plenty of cash.
