The Good: Gujarat generally has excellent road infrastructure. Cars here often face less suspension wear-and-tear compared to states with pothole-ridden roads. The dry climate also means rust is less of a primary concern than in coastal cities.
The Risk: Heat is the enemy here. The scorching summers can take a toll on rubber components (hoses, belts, window seals) and dashboard plastics. Paint fading is also common if the car hasn’t been parked in covered areas. When checking a car in our S.G. The Kochi Equation

The Risk: Humidity and terrain. The coastal air brings the risk of salt corrosion (rust), especially in the underbody and wheel arches. Furthermore, Kerala’s winding roads and hills put more stress on the transmission and brake pads than flat city driving.

The Budget Trap (It’s Not Just the Sticker Price)
You’ve got ₹5 Lakhs or ₹20 Lakhs in your mind. Great. But is that your buying budget or your owning budget? They are not the same thing.
When buying a second-hand car, you need to account for the “Day One” costs. If you max out your budget on the purchase price, you might find yourself in trouble a month later.
The 80-20 Rule
We recommend allocating 80% of your funds to the car purchase and keeping 20% aside. Here is where that 20% goes:
Insurance Transfer/Renewal: If the existing insurance has expired or is Third-Party only, you’ll want to upgrade to Comprehensive cover immediately.
Immediate Service: Even if the seller says, “I just serviced it,” do it again. Changing the engine oil, oil filter, and air filter gives you a fresh baseline for maintenance.
Tyres and Battery: These are consumables. If the car is 4 years old, the battery might be on its last legs. A set of new tyres for an SUV can cost ₹30,000+.
Cosmetic Fixes: A deep interior clean, some paint touch-ups, or new floor mats make the car feel yours.
Fuel Type Decisions: Petrol, Diesel, or Hybrid?
Petrol: Best for city driving in traffic-heavy areas like Ashram Road in Ahmedabad. Lower maintenance, smoother drive.
Diesel: If you are doing long highway runs or frequent trips to the hills in Kerala, the torque and mileage of a diesel engine are unbeatable. However, keep an eye on the “10-year diesel rule” discussions in major metros (though less strictly enforced here than in Delhi, resale value can be affected).
Hybrid: We are seeing a surge in demand for used Hybrids (like the Camry or Lexus models we often stock). They offer the best of both worlds but check the battery health report rigorously.
The Inspection (How to Spot a Lemon)
This is the meat of the guide. You don’t need to be a mechanic to spot a bad car, but you do need to be observant. When you walk up to a car, don’t just kick the tyres. Use this checklist.
A. The Bodywork and Exterior
Walk around the car in broad daylight. Never inspect a car in the rain or at night—water and darkness hide scratches and dents.
Panel Gaps: Look at the gaps between the door and the frame, or the bonnet and the fender. They should be even all the way down. If the gap is tight at the top and wide at the bottom, that panel has been replaced or realigned—likely due to an accident.
Paint Texture: Run your hand along the panels. Does the paint feel smooth like glass, or rough like an orange peel? “Orange peel” texture usually indicates a repainted area.
The Magnet Test: (Pro tip) Take a small fridge magnet wrapped in a tissue (to prevent scratches). Place it on the wheel arches and lower door panels. If it doesn’t stick, there’s plastic body filler (putty) underneath, hiding rust or dent repairs.
B. Under the Hood (The Heart of the Matter)
Pop the bonnet. You aren’t looking for shiny plastic covers; you are looking for leaks and neglect.
Oil Leaks: Look at the engine block. Is it wet or greasy? Fresh oil stains are a bad sign. Old, caked grime suggests long-term neglect.
The Dipstick: Pull out the oil dipstick. The oil should be golden or brown. If it’s jet black and thick like sludge, the car hasn’t been serviced in ages. If it looks milky or like coffee-shake, walk away immediately—that means coolant is mixing with the oil (head gasket failure), which is a catastrophic engine repair.
Coolant: Check the coolant reservoir. It should be green or pink. If it’s just clear water, the owner has been cheap. If it’s rusty brown, the radiator is corroding from the inside.
C. The Interior and Flood Check
This is especially crucial for our Kochi customers, but applicable everywhere.
The Smell: Take a deep breath when you open the door. Heavy air freshener use is often masking the smell of mold or mildew.
Seat Belts: Pull the seat belts all the way out to the end. Inspect the fabric at the very end. If you see water stains or mold there, the car has been submerged. Seat belt mechanisms are rarely cleaned after a flood.
Dashboard Warning Lights: Turn the ignition to “On” (don’t start the engine yet). All the lights (Check Engine, ABS, Airbag, Battery) should glow. Then start the engine. They should all disappear. If the “Check Engine” light never comes on, the seller might have removed the bulb/fuse to hide a fault. If it stays on, there is an active problem.

Turn off the radio. Tell the salesperson to stop talking for a minute. You need to listen to the car.
The Cold Start: Ideally, tell the seller you want to see the car “cold” (first start of the day). A cold engine reveals more problems (rattles, smoke) than a warm one.
Steering: On an empty stretch, center the steering wheel. Does the car pull to the left or right? That could be a simple alignment issue, or it could be a bent chassis. Turn the wheel fully lock-to-lock. Listen for “clicking” sounds—that indicates worn-out CV joints.
Braking: Get up to 40-50 km/h and brake firmly. Does the steering wheel shudder or vibrate? That means the brake rotors are warped. Does the car nose-dive excessively? The front suspension shocks might be dead.
The Gearbox:
Manual: The clutch should engage smoothly, not right at the top of the pedal travel. Gears should slot in without a “crunch.”
Automatic: Shift from P to D. Is there a massive jerk or “thud”? That’s a transmission mount or gearbox issue. The shifts while driving should be imperceptible.
The Exhaust: Have a friend stand behind the car while you rev it.
Blue Smoke: Burning oil (Engine is worn out).
Black Smoke: Fuel combustion issue (Injectors/Turbo).
White Smoke: Coolant leak (Head gasket).
The Luxury Segment (A Special Note)

The Depreciation Math
A brand new BMW 3 Series might cost ₹60 Lakhs+ on road. A 5-year-old model might be available at our showroom for ₹20-25 Lakhs. You are getting 100% of the car for 40% of the price. It is an incredible value proposition.
The “Service History” Commandment
For luxury cars, service history is not optional; it is mandatory.
Luxury cars are reliable if maintained. A single missed oil change can sludge up the variable valve timing sensors.1
At Kamdhenu, we do not procure luxury cars without verifying the authorized service center records. We check if the major services (transmission fluid changes, timing belt replacements) were done on schedule.
The Electronics Check
Modern luxury cars are rolling computers. Test everything: The sunroof, the powered seats, the infotainment screen, the parking sensors. A faulty motorized AC vent in a luxury car can cost ₹20,000 to fix. We ensure these are functional before the car hits our sales floor.
Paperwork & Documentation
You can buy the best car in the world, but if the papers are bad, you’ve bought a lawn ornament, not a vehicle. This is where the process differs slightly between Gujarat and Kerala.
1. The RC (Registration Certificate)
Verify the engine and chassis number on the RC against the metal plate on the car. They must match character-for-character.
2. Form 29 & 30
These are the standard RTO forms for ownership transfer.
Form 29: Notice of transfer of ownership.
Form 30: Report of transfer of ownership.
Both need to be signed by the seller and buyer.
3. Form 35 (Hypothecation Termination)
If the previous owner had a car loan, there will be a “Hypothecation” note on the RC. You need an NOC from the bank and Form 35 to remove this. If you don’t remove it, the car technically still belongs to the bank.
4. Insurance Transfer
Insurance doesn’t automatically transfer with the car. You have 14 days from the date of purchase to inform the insurance company. If you don’t, and you have an accident on day 15, your claim will be rejected.

Selling or Exchanging Your Old Car

You have to deal with strangers visiting your home, low-ball negotiation tactics, and—most dangerously—the liability. If you sell the car and the buyer doesn’t transfer the RC, and then commits a crime or has an accident, you are still legally liable.
Online Aggregators: They promise speed, but their “online quote” rarely matches the “final offer” after inspection. They often chip away at the price for every minor scratch.
Dealership Exchange (Kamdhenu): This is usually the smoothest route.
Tax Benefit: In some cases, trading in a car reduces the tax burden on the new purchase.
Speed: You drive in with the old car and drive out with the new one. No gap without a vehicle.

Financing Your Pre-Owned Car
A common myth is that you can’t get good loans on used cars.
Banks and NBFCs are very aggressive in the used car space now. If you are buying a certified car from a reputed dealer, getting a loan is easy.
Tenure: usually up to 5 years (depending on the age of the car).
LTV (Loan to Value): Banks will fund 80-90% of the car’s valuation.
Interest Rates: slightly higher than new cars (usually 1-3% higher), but because the principal amount is lower (due to depreciation), your total interest outflow is often much less than buying a new car.
