India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 took a most important step towards transforming vocational education in the country, giving it the acknowledgement it deserves as a powerful tool to concoct the workforce for the industrial requirements of the 21st century.

In the past, educational policies in India often treated vocational education as inferior to standard academic training. NEP 2020 aimed to change all of that, converging on comprehending vocational training into the mainstream curriculum and emphasizing its position, significance, and approachability for all learners across the country.

A Central Paradigm Shift: Implementation and Early Exposure
The policy states clearly that there must not be a hard separation between academic and vocational streams, thus aiming to resolve the social hierarchy and stigma historically associated with vocational education in India.

To achieve this goal, NEP 2020 makes it obligatory for vocational education to be employed at all educational levels, including schools, colleges, and higher education institutions. This helps ensure that every student gets ...
... the possibility to develop essential practical skills they need for contributing to national growth, apart from their academic knowledge.

One of the crucial defining aspects of NEP 2020 is the removal of the traditional divide between vocational and academic streams. The policy has set a rather lofty target for itself: to make sure that at least 50% learners in India across all educational systems have access to vocational training by 2025.

The exposure to vocational training should begin as early as middle school, i.e., 6th to 8th standards, where the students can explore different skills and crafts like carpentry, gardening, electrical work, and pottery, depending on local requirements and aspirations. This policy also intends to implement “bagless days” and internships with some of the local vocational professionals so that the students can receive hands-on, real-world experience.

Curriculum, local relevance, and flexibility
NEP 2020 prioritizes a prospectus that is both locally pertinent and supple. Districts and schools can choose vocations according to the prospects available in their local areas, student aspirations, and skill gap analyses. Such an approach helps to make sure that vocational education is thoroughly associated with the economic requirements of the nation. It also pledges that vocational training is responsive to the needs of the local crafts and industries. This method also facilitates seamless integration of “LokVidya” into the curriculum, which is the vocational knowledge traditionally practiced in India.

Under NEP 2020, vocational modules are provided at the secondary and senior secondary levels as elective or additional subjects.

Students are free to choose from an extensive range of job roles across 22 distinct sectors that are compliant with the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). This curriculum also effectively incorporates diverse employability skills such as digital literacy, communication, entrepreneurship, and green skills, thus broadening the applicability and scope of vocational training for all.

Teacher training and institutional support
To make the integration procedure easier for this policy, NEP 2020 aims to make some major investments in teacher and infrastructure development. The remodeled Samagra Shiksha scheme provides grants to schools to advance their tools, equipment, and skill labs by cooperating with local businesses and polytechnics.

This policy also implements local teacher education programs that enable hiring local resource people for short-term courses, as well as makes it essential to use regular induction and upskilling programs for all vocational teachers through institutions such as the Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE).

Oversight, innovation, and collaboration
The goal of NEP 2020 is to empower all apprentices across the country with pertinent practical skills, improve employability, and bridge the gap between training and industry by bringing vocational education into the mainstream. It has a clear aim for itself: not to treat vocational education as an alternative to mainstream education but to consider it as a crucial road to holistic education for Indian youth that is in line with the requirements of the future.

A National Committee for the Integration of Vocational Education (NCIVE) has also been established to screen and synchronize such efforts, along with representatives from several ministries and industry partners. Higher education foundations across the country are instructed to set up vocational incubation centers and experiment with apprenticeship models to foster innovation and industry collaboration.
