Understanding Youth Violence: Risk, Roots And Pathways To Healing
Violence and aggression are not random traits; they are deeply embedded in human evolution as mechanisms of self-protection. However, when these emotions go unchecked, they can manifest as harmful behaviours, particularly among adolescents. Statistics consistently show that violent crime peaks in adolescence before tapering off in adulthood, making it crucial to explore the why behind youth aggression.
Why Young People Become Violent:
1. Biological Influences: Hormones and neurological factors play a role in shaping aggression. For instance, research links higher testosterone levels to increased aggression. Such findings remind us that, sometimes, a young person’s violent behaviour stems from biology rather than simply “bad choices”.
2. Environmental Factors: Environment often outweighs biology in shaping behaviour. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)-such as neglect, abuse, or exposure to community violence- Bandura’s classic Bobo Doll experiment further demonstrated how children imitate the aggression they witness, proving that learned behaviours can carry long-lasting effects.
3. Mental ...
... Health and Unmet Needs: Over 90% of justice-involved youth meet the criteria for at least one mental health disorder, yet few receive adequate support. Violence, in many cases, becomes a coping mechanism for distress or untreated psychological struggles.
Fear and Aggression:
Not all violence stems from anger-sometimes it is rooted in fear. For example, studies show that young people may act aggressively as a defensive strategy, striking first to avoid harm. This understanding helps shift the narrative: violence does not always reflect malice but can reflect desperation and survival instincts.
Gender and Violence:
While male violence is often the focus, female aggression is equally important to understand. Men may use aggression as a means of control, while women are more likely to act violently when they feel threatened. Recognising these differences helps practitioners design interventions that meet the unique needs of both boys and girls.
Tools for Working with Violent Youth:
1. Restorative Practices: Restorative justice encourages accountability and repair, rather than punishment. For example, schools that adopt restorative questioning have reported fewer conflicts and stronger relationships between staff and students.
2. The Compass of Shame: Nathanson’s Compass of Shame highlights how people respond when ashamed- through withdrawal, self-attack, avoidance or attacking others. By using reflective questions, practitioners can help young people break free from harmful cycles of shame-driven aggression.
3. Safeguarding and Boundaries: Protecting both young people and practitioners is essential. Contextual safeguarding expands protection beyond the home to schools, peer groups, and communities, acknowledging the environments where violence often occurs.
A Path Toward Healing:
Youth violence is complex, influenced by biology, environment, fear and trauma. But complexity does not mean hopelessness. Early interventions, trauma-informed practices, and restorative approaches can transform aggression into growth. At ImPerfect Psychotherapy(https://imperfect.co.in/), we work with individuals and groups to uncover the roots of aggression, develop healthier coping strategies, and strengthen emotional resilience. We also offer Youth Wellness program to support communities and organizations in addressing conflict constructively. What if, instead of asking “Whats wrong with this young person?”, we asked “What happened to them?”
