Industrialisation has altered the way the world operates during the last decade. While it has been beneficial in most circumstances, there is one significant negative it has left for us to cope with. Climate change is a major subject that has caused concern around the world. It caused humans to experience extremes such as high temperatures, severe rainfall, famines, and global warming. In this blog, we will look at how it influenced storm drainage systems.

Stormwater management

Let’s examine how traditional stormwater management systems are responding to climate change and urbanisation. The following are the issues typical storm drain systems face.

Capacity issues

The traditional stormwater drainage solutions are strained by global warming with surplus runoff among other issues. With increased rainfall frequency and intensity, the traditional systems could not sustain the capacity and therefore leaked, causing flooding on the streets.

Poor Adaptability to Rising Sea Levels

With both rise of sea levels due to global warming and stormwater discharge into rivers, lakes and coastal areas, ...
... the nearby residential areas are prone to frequent floods. Additionally, the storm drainage system becomes less efficient in draining water. This can cause both property damage and livelihood damage.

Increased Urbanization and Impervious Surfaces

Urban impervious surfaces like buildings and roads cover natural land and are unable to drain the excess runoff resulting from the decrease in natural infiltration. Without adequate green space, underground rainwater drainage systems become influenced, increasing the susceptibility to flooding.

Water Quality Issues

Traditional stormwater drainage solutions do little to clean and filter runoff. Toxins such as heavy metals, oil, chemicals, and trash are released directly into water bodies, poisoning the water supply and causing the death of aquatic species. It is a cause of such ailments as algal blooms and habitat destruction
