Among the most widely used is 10mm aggregate, a finely crushed stone essential in producing concrete, road base layers, precast elements, drainage systems, and decorative finishes. But how exactly is this material manufactured and delivered from rugged quarries to neatly packed construction sites?

The Foundation: Quarrying the Raw Material
The journey of 10mm aggregate begins in natural stone deposits, often located in quarries. These geological formations contain massive rock beds that are suitable for crushing into various sizes of aggregate. The type of rock—granite, limestone, basalt, or dolomite—will influence the physical properties of the final product.

Next comes secondary crushing, where cone crushers or impact crushers further break the material down. At this stage, crushed stone approaches the desired size range, including 10mm particles.
For even finer control, tertiary crushers may be used to produce precise gradations and eliminate oversize materials.
Screening: Separating by Size
The crushed material is then passed through a series of vibrating screens, where it is sorted into different sizes.
A screen fitted with 10mm mesh openings allows only particles of that specific size to pass through. Anything larger is sent back through the crushers for further reduction. This loop continues until the desired proportion of 10mm material is achieved.

Washing and Cleaning
Depending on its end use, the 10mm aggregate may undergo a washing process to remove dust, clay, silt, and other impurities. Clean aggregate ensures:

Aggregate that fails to meet the specifications is either reprocessed or discarded. State-of-the-art laboratories at larger production sites test samples from every batch to guarantee consistency.
Stockpiling and Storage
Once processed and approved, 10mm aggregate is conveyed to stockpiles using radial stackers or conveyor systems. These stockpiles are carefully designed to prevent:

Segregation of particles,
Moisture accumulation,
Contamination by foreign materials.

Some plants use multiple stockpiles to separate materials by type (washed vs. unwashed), color, or source rock.
In automated concrete batching plants, aggregates are transferred to compartmentalized bins, allowing precise mixing of multiple aggregate sizes.

Loose bulk loads: Delivered in tipper trucks directly to the construction site.
Bulk bags: Typically 500 kg to 1-tonne bags, ideal for smaller projects or retail.
Containers or railcars: For large-scale projects or exports.

Modern plants may use automated loading systems that weigh, track, and load aggregates with minimal manual intervention, increasing efficiency and reducing errors.
Transportation to Construction Sites
The final leg of the journey involves delivering the aggregate to its destination. This is a logistical operation requiring coordination to minimize delays and ensure timely delivery.
Factors considered during transportation include:

Distance from quarry to site,
Road access and terrain,
Load size and legal weight limits,
Weather conditions.

Some projects require just-in-time delivery, especially where space is limited and continuous concrete pouring is underway. In such cases, coordination between the quarry and construction team is critical.
 Final Application on Site
At the construction site, 10mm aggregate is used in a wide variety of applications, including:

Concrete production for slabs, foundations, beams, and columns,
Road base layers and pavement,

Plastering and rendering as part of a fine-grain mix,
