The Difference Between Public And Private Hire Vehicles

However, you may not realise how much of a difference there is between a private hire vehicle and a public hire one. We tend to think of taxi cabs as being a single type of vehicle, but this is not the case at all. If you are running a private hire company, then you will have to park your vehicle in a central depot and wait for prearranged customers to board your cab. For example, it is not permitted for you to just go looking around for fares at railway stations or airports. In a nutshell; it will be necessary for every one of your customers to book their trips in advance.
This may make it sound as if you will be pretty limited with clients, but most private hire firms get along quite happily enough. Put it this way; if they did not, then we would only ever see public hire taxis on our streets! Besides, over time, you are bound to build up your own client base. Any private hire company will have plenty of its own regular customers who make the same journeys time and again. Many people will feel more secure with routine and you are likely to see many of the same faces every week!
So, there is something ...
... to be said for both types of taxi work and anyone considering starting out with their own company should give plenty of thought to each. Do you like the idea of ‘fishing' for custom? Or do you prefer the ‘advanced bookings' technique? It doesn't really matter which of these you decide on because they both have the potential to become a very profitable business. However, there is one other very important factor left to consider... insurance.
Now, if you are still unsure of exactly which route to follow, then the question of insurance may well have an effect on your final decision. The bottom line is that private hire insurance is often far cheaper than that for public hire. Considering that this will be one of your largest annual outgoings, it may be a very good reason to opt for private hire. You can also choose from several different types of cover for your pre-booked taxi cabs. There will be policies for private hire companies who tend to stay within the city limits with their vehicles and others for firms who specialise in making many far longer trips. Obviously, there will be a difference in cost between these types of protection and it is important to read as much about each as you can. It may even help to shape the way that you ultimately run your taxi business.
