Thermo-Mechanically Treated (TMT) bars are the heartbeat of present day construction as they are proven to be extremely workable, strong and flexible. They however may corrode due to being exposed to moisture, chemicals, and atmospheric conditions thus weakening the structure. In response to this risk protective coating over TMT bars prove to be a necessary element in a construction practices to ensure durability and adequate service life of reinforced concrete structure without compromising the other elements of construction.
TMT bars put on coatings to protect against water, chlorides and sulfates which act as corrosive agents, creating a physical and chemical barrier. These coatings do not only prolong the life of TMT bars but also improves the life of complete construction especially in places of moisture, in salt, or where industrial pollutants are present. Protective coatings are very important in a region such as Chennai or Mumbai because high levels of humidity and salinity may lead to early deterioration of concrete frameworks.
Protective coatings to TMT bars can be of different kinds and each has a particular ...
... useful aspect of it depending on the project specifications and the surrounding conditions. One of the most common epoxy coatings has to do with good adhesion, chemical resistance and its ability to seal the bar surface quite effectively. Fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) coating is an electrostatic ally applied paint that provides uniform coverage and is acid resistant and provides excellent corrosion resistance; thus it is suitable in bridges, highways, and marine structures.
Another good type of primer is zinc rich primers and galvanization techniques. They are zinc-based and the sacrificial nature of the metal is used as a protective measure of the underlying steel. When the coating gets scratched or otherwise damaged, the zinc is chosen to corrode because of this fact, and protects the TMT bar. This method can be of special use in sea areas or in sewage plants with less than benign corrosion environments.
Protective coating with cementations and Polymer modified coating is another new development in protective coating of TMT bars. These coatings do not only prevent corrosion, but they help to enhance the adhesion between steel and concrete. They should be applied in form of slurry mixtures and may be employed in form of retirement or retrofitting works also. Their non-toxic character, cement-based composition would predispose them to use in water-retaining systems such as tanks, dams, and swimming pools.
Protective coatings also help in long term cost savings. Although the initial price of the coated TMT bars maybe a little more as compared to the plain TMT bars, the lower maintenance cost, longer life span, and the avoidance of making costly repairs is quite beneficial in the long term and economically fruitful. Moreover, protective coatings ensure the safety of structure to a certain degree, as they facilitate corrosion-related risks.
Protective coatings are also useful in minimizing carbon footprints in the current sustainability oriented construction business. They contribute to the prolongation of concrete structures life and the reduction of raw materials use needed to repair or replace them and energy savings.
To sum up, Protective coatings for TMT bars is an intelligent and indeed mandatory investment in the world of construction. These coatings can be constructed in residential buildings, road and bridge construction, and heavy industrial systems to strengthen the lifespan and durability of reinforced concrete. With the novel complications that are emerging during constructions, using innovative methods of protection that apply to TMT bars will be essential towards safe, environmentally friendly and sustainable construction efforts.
