Transport & Travel Support Through the NDIS: What’s Covered?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme gives transport funding to participants who cannot use public transport because of their disability. This means that if a person finds it too difficult to take buses, trains or trams, they may be able to get help from the NDIS. The transport funding is not for carers to drive family members for everyday tasks, and it does not cover public transport fares or changes to public transport. Those are the responsibility of local councils and public transport services.
The NDIS offers transport support at three different levels. The amount a person receives depends on how often they travel and the activities they take part in. Some participants may get help to attend social events, while others may need more support if they are working, studying, or attending regular programs. Those who work or study for more than 15 hours a week and cannot use public transport due to their disability may be eligible for the highest level of assistance.

It may cover assistive technology like travel apps or mobility equipment that makes travelling easier. For those who have their own vehicle, the NDIS might help with modifications to make it suitable for their needs. Driving lessons can also be included if they are necessary for the person to become more independent. To receive travel support, participants should talk about their transport needs during their NDIS planning meeting. The planner will ask how the disability impacts their ability to travel and how support can help them achieve their goals. If the participant’s situation changes in the future, they can request a plan review to adjust their transport allowance.
