The steel industry accounts for approximately 7–9% of global carbon dioxide emissions, making it one of the largest industrial contributors to climate change. As the world moves towards carbon neutrality, green steel is emerging as a revolutionary approach to reduce the environmental footprint of steel production.

Green steel refers to steel produced using processes that significantly cut or eliminate carbon emissions. This shift is driven by technologies such as hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (H₂-DRI), electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).

Hydrogen-based steel production replaces traditional carbon-intensive coke with hydrogen gas to remove oxygen from iron ore, releasing only water vapor instead of carbon dioxide. Pilot projects like Sweden’s HYBRIT initiative have successfully demonstrated fossil-free steelmaking at a commercial scale.
