In ancient India, philosophy was something people lived out, not only learned from teachers. At that
time, sages, rishis, and seekers did not just produce writings and temples; they gave us a roadmap
for a conscious way of living. To follow in their path is to embrace a way of life that remains
meaningful even today.
These persons lived lives marked by simplicity and clarity. They turned away from comforts not to
make life difficult, but to prevent themselves from being distracted. They attained enlightenment
through meditation in forests and mountain caves, relying on their own experience rather than
merely accepting theories. They used their experiences to explore the nature of consciousness.
For example,
rishi Yajnavalkya, who engaged in philosophical discussions with learned members of
society, questioned the nature of who we are, and philosopher-saint Gargi discussed and contested
metaphysics at royal gatherings. They were courageous not because they thought highly of
themselves, but because they loved truth.
For these prophets, there ...
... was no clear boundary between religious and everyday life. Every aspect
of their lives—from daily meals to speech and teaching—was guided by mindfulness and ethics.
They lived by the principles of non-violence, honesty, and self-discipline.
To follow their path today means embracing their way of thinking in our everyday actions. It’s
about reflecting deeply, living calmly, loving with simplicity, and sharing generously. It leads us to
find knowledge by reading and by being silent, thoughtful, and kind to those around us.
Rational inquiry was also a key aspect of the lives of the wisest from ancient India. Among their
questions was Who am I? What is the reason for our existence? What happens when life ends? They
did not ask abstract questions; instead, their queries were about their own lives. They questioned
inherited beliefs and sought answers through their own understanding and experience.
Wise individuals in ancient India used meditation and contemplation as their primary means of
learning. By engaging in these practices, they could see past the surface and reach the core meaning
of life. They understood that knowledge of truth comes from action, not from just hearing lessons.
Several of these sages were intimately connected with nature. They gained inspiration from the
rivers, mountains, and forests that surrounded them. They did not see science and nature as separate
but believed in their harmony.
Choosing to follow ancient customs does not require you to reject modern life. It is about applying
old ideals to new situations and challenges. It requires us to go deeper when there is so much
around us to distract us and to find real meaning amidst all the noise.
Living your life according to the example shown by these wise men involves intentionality,
kindness, and clear thinking. No matter who we are—parents, professionals, or artists—we can
embrace the same spirit and purpose they once did.
By following their example, we learn to live with simplicity, mindfulness, and purpose—
discovering the sacred within the ordinary moments of daily life. It helps us appreciate who we are
and how we feel, guiding us toward fully embracing our authentic selves
