Understanding the Fragility of Traumatic Memory:

Traumatic memories are not as fixed as we might believe. Like all memories, they are vulnerable to distortion and even suppression. Studies show that people often recall more trauma than they experienced- a phenomenon tied to how our brains manage memory and emotion. This over-remembering can fuel the re-experiencing symptoms common in PTSD, such as flashbacks and intrusive thoughts.
Example: A person involved in a minor car accident might later remember it as more severe, feeling as if they nearly died because of repeated mental rehearsals and stress responses.

Why Traumatic Memories Can Go Missing:
Some traumatic events, particularly chronic ones like childhood abuse, are so overwhelming that the brain suppresses them to protect us. These memories can hide in the subconscious, inaccessible to our conscious mind but still capable of causing anxiety, depression, PTSD, or dissociative disorder. This is due in part to state-dependent-learning, the idea that memories formed in a heightened emotional or drug-induced state can only be retrieved when the brain ...
... returns to the same state.
For example, If someone experiences trauma while under the influence of extreme fear or dissociation, they may not recall it unless they are in a similar emotional state again.

Memory Storage on the Brain’s “AM Frequency”:

Recent research has identified a specific brain mechanism responsible for hiding traumatic memories. Extra-synaptic GABA receptors can shift the brain into a different state-like tuning a radio from FM to AM. When trauma occurs in this altered state, the brain stores it differently, making the memory hard to access unless the brain re-enters that same state.
Example: In a mouse study, animals given a drug to activate these GABA receptors didn’t recall a shock unless the drug was reintroduced revealing the memory was hidden, not erased.

Why this matters for Therapy and Recovery:
This research has profound implications for trauma therapy. Traditional methods may not work if a person can’t access their core traumatic memories. However, understanding the role of brain states can guide future treatments. Therapists may use specific emotional or physiological cues to help clients reconnect with these memories safely.
Example: A client struggling with panic attacks may not recall the origin of their fear, but through guided exposure or trauma-informed approaches, they may re-access and process the original event.

Reframing Trauma Through Context and Emotion:

Healing from trauma also involves reconnecting the memory with its original context, time, place, and emotional state in which it occurred. This helps integrate the memory into a cohesive narrative, rather than allowing it to float as an overwhelming, fragmented experience. Positive emotions may also play a role in rebuilding stronger, healthier memories, especially for those suffering from memory loss or emotional numbness.

Example: For someone with PTSD, recalling moments of strength or safety alongside trauma can help reshape their overall narrative. At ImPerfect Psychotherapy(https://imperfect.co.in/), we understand that trauma recovery isn’t linear — and sometimes, it doesn’t begin with memory, but with symptoms. If your brain has worked this hard to protect you, imagine what it could do to help you heal with the right support.
