If you don’t link a real physical address to your GBP, you’re losing out on rankings and easy leads.

Google MAY be marking you as spam without one.

Why Google Requires a Physical Address
Google WANTS...

(its their number 1 priority, even beating out money)

To deliver the best possible experience to their users.

Because of this, it’s job is to protect users from scams, spam, and dodgy businesses.

(I know its no saint, though)

If you don’t have a physical address attached to your Google Business Profile (even if you hide it from the public), Google has no way to properly verify that you’re real = no trust = you’re a dodgy business in their eyes.

From Googles point of view, a real business should have:

A real-world location (even if it’s just an office, a workshop, or your home)

Real customers that could theoretically visit if they needed to

A footprint that proves you actually exist

Google’s system is built to bury listings without one.

What I’m saying it’s; its basically a non negotiable.

But here’s why ...
... it REALLY matters:
Having a physical address isn’t just about passing Google’s checks

It directly boosts your ability to rank on the SERPs and Maps feature

Heres a breakdown:

1. You get a visible map pin
The Map Pack (those top 3 map listings that get a ton of clicks) relies heavily on real-world locations.

If you don’t have a physical address – even a hidden one – Google has no way to pin you on the map.

No pin = no Map Pack.

HOWEVER, there is still a chance you CAN appear here (top 3), even without a pin, but this only goes for low competitive areas.

Otherwise, you’ll be post 3+ results, and no one will ever really see you.

2. Stronger Proximity Signals = Better Local Visibility
When someone searches for something like “electrician near me,” Google’s not just looking at relevance, it’s laser-focused on proximity.

Your physical address acts as your “anchor point” for local search.

The closer your address is to the searcher, the better shot you have at appearing in front of them.

No physical address = no proximity boost = lower chances of being seen.

3. Builds Trust with Google and Customers
Google hates spam.

A verified, real-world address instantly makes your listing look more legitimate, both to Google’s algorithm and to the human eye.

Customers are way more likely to call or message if they feel you’re an actual local business

(They are sick of faceless orgs at this point)

It also shows where you have your flag placed, so if a job DOES go wrong, customers can find you and deal with it.

4) Boosts Your NAP Consistency (Which Powers Local SEO)
Your [NAP]: Name, Address, Phone number — needs to match everywhere:

your website,
your GBP,
your citations (Yell, Checkatrade, etc.).

Having a real address makes it 10x easier to build that clean, consistent online footprint Google loves.

Consistency across the web = authority signals = stronger local rankings.

Quick tip:
If you really don’t want to show your home address, set up a small rented office, workshop, or co-working space in your service area and then register your address from there.

5) Unlocks Access to Other Google Features
If you ever want to run Google Local Services Ads

or if you want faster, easier verification in the future – you’re gonna need a real address.

It also makes dealing with their support a LOT easier.

What if You Don’t Want to Show Your Address?
Fair question – and the good news, despite what’s been said: you don’t have to.

You might be running your business from your house (because you've just started out) or just don’t want random customers turning up unannounced; you can hide your address from the public.

While still getting MOST of the ranking benefits behind the scenes.

Here’s the deal:
You still need a physical address attached to your Google Business Profile, even if you don’t want it shown publicly.

When you set up your profile, you can choose to hide your address from customers:

✅ Google still sees you as a legit local business.
✅ You still benefit from proximity signals (ranking boost).
✅ You don’t have random people turning up at your house/office.

But:
You won’t get ALL of the benefits that come from having an address on your GBP; customers will trust you less and proximity rankings aren’t quite as good.

Service Area Businesses vs. Physical Address Listings
If you’re an electrician without a shopfront, Google lets you set up as a Service Area Business (SAB).

That means instead of showing your actual address, you show the towns and areas you serve.

Sounds good, right?

Kinda:

Physical address listings usually rank better — because Google prefers businesses it can “pin” on a map.

Service area businesses can still rank — but you’re often at a slight disadvantage in the local pack, especially when searchers are physically close to a competitor with a visible address.

If you have the choice, it’s better to show an address rather than go fully SAB.

Quick breakdown:

Basically: If you can safely use your home address (and hide it from the public), do it.

You’ll give yourself a much better chance of dominating the Map Pack.

The Dangers of Virtual Offices and PO Boxes
Despite the fact I have already recommended you set up some sort of virtual office or co-working space to your Google Business Profile, I just want to give you a few warnings

*It HAS worked for me in the past, but not without its issues.

Here’s what the general thought is behind doing it:

Google’s guidelines clearly say no to virtual offices and PO boxes unless staff are permanently on-site during business hours.

Verification nightmares. Even if you somehow verify it, your listing is always one complaint away from getting suspended.

Weak trust signals. Customers can spot fake or dodgy addresses a mile off. If they see a “Regus” office or a PO box, they’re way less likely to trust you — especially when they’re looking for someone to come into their home.

Ranking issues. Google’s spam filters are smarter than ever. They know virtual offices = likely spam = drop you down the Map Pack (or kick you out altogether).

It can work, but if you’re serious about building an electrical business, one that you and your town can be proud of, and something that you wish to pass down generation after generation, then use a legit address.

Rounding off:
If you’re serious about ranking locally and actually getting found by customers, having a physical address tied to your Google Business Profile is a must.

It’s one of the strongest signals Google uses to trust your business, boost your Map Pack visibility, and connect you with customers searching nearby.
