The Zenobia wreck is often regarded as one of the best dive sites in Europe and consistently ranks among the top ten wreck dives in the world. Resting just off the coast of Larnaca in Cyprus, the Zenobia offers an unforgettable diving experience that combines history, marine life, and a fascinating underwater environment. Whether you're a recreational diver or an experienced technical enthusiast, the Zenobia has something to offer.

The Zenobia was a Swedish roll-on/roll-off ferry that tragically sank on her maiden voyage in 1980. She now lies on her port side at depths ranging from 16 to 42 metres, making her accessible to divers of varying skill levels. The wreck is enormous, stretching nearly 178 metres in length, and has become a man-made reef teeming with aquatic life.

The upper sections of the wreck, including the starboard side and the lifeboats, are within reach of open water divers. These areas provide an excellent introduction to wreck diving, allowing for an easy descent and plenty to explore without the need for advanced certifications. The scale of the vessel is awe-inspiring, and just hovering over ...
... the starboard railings gives you a sense of her immense size.

For those with the appropriate training, deeper penetration dives into the Zenobia reveal her haunting cargo of around 100 articulated lorries. Many of these lorries are still chained in place on the cargo decks, offering divers a surreal and eerie visual experience. Some lie scattered across the seabed, having broken loose during the sinking.

The wreck is generally entered through clearly marked points, and dive guides ensure safety remains the top priority. The corridors, cargo decks, and engine room are popular areas for exploration, especially among experienced divers trained in wreck penetration. Visibility is often excellent, sometimes reaching 25 metres or more, which enhances the experience and makes navigation easier.

Marine life has flourished around the wreck since it settled on the seabed. Schools of barracuda, large groupers, moray eels, and scorpionfish are regularly seen. Sea bream, nudibranchs, and the occasional turtle add to the biodiversity. The wreck has become a thriving artificial reef that attracts species not commonly seen on natural reefs in Cyprus.

The Zenobia is not only an exciting dive site but also a well-preserved piece of maritime history. Although the exact cause of her sinking remains a subject of debate, many believe it was due to a computer error in the ballast system. Despite efforts to tow her back to port, the vessel listed and ultimately sank a few hundred metres from shore.
Water temperatures around the wreck are comfortable, ranging from 16°C in the winter to around 28°C during the peak summer months. Most divers will find a 5mm wetsuit suitable for year-round exploration, although a dry suit may be preferred in the colder months.

Dive operators typically offer boat access to the Zenobia from nearby Larnaca Marina, with most trips including a full briefing and optional guided dives. The site is well managed and monitored to ensure diver safety and preserve the condition of the wreck. Many operators also offer night dives for a completely different perspective on the site.

Night dives on the Zenobia are a unique experience. The atmosphere changes dramatically as nocturnal creatures emerge, and the shadows cast by torchlight create a mysterious and captivating environment. It's a chance to see the wreck in an entirely new way.

For photographers, the Zenobia presents a wealth of opportunities. From wide-angle shots of the towering hull to macro images of the small marine life inhabiting her nooks and crannies, there is no shortage of subjects. The clarity of the water and the play of natural light make for excellent conditions.

The sheer volume of the wreck means it’s impossible to see everything in one dive. Many divers return multiple times to explore different parts of the site, from the cargo decks to the cafeteria and bridge. Each dive reveals something new, making it a site that continues to impress even after several visits.

Safety is paramount when diving the Zenobia, especially for those planning penetration dives. Proper training, equipment, and the guidance of a knowledgeable dive leader are essential for safely navigating the internal sections of the wreck.

The wreck also holds emotional weight, as no lives were lost during the sinking. Divers often reflect on this aspect during their visit, appreciating the fact that they are exploring a historical site with a story rather than a tragedy.

Divers visiting Cyprus often plan their itinerary around the Zenobia, and for good reason. It offers a world-class experience that stands out even among the Mediterranean’s many diving gems. The combination of depth, scale, marine life, and history makes it a must-see for anyone passionate about wreck diving.

For those seeking a dive that delivers both adventure and reverence, the Zenobia offers an unmatched experience. It stands as a monument beneath the sea—one that continues to attract and inspire divers from around the world. Whether you’re exploring it for the first time or the fiftieth, the Zenobia promises to leave a lasting impression.
