Eudaimonia, as a concept, was first found in the works of Socrates (469-399 BCE), the great Greek Philosopher who opined that true happiness arises from living a life of virtue and wisdom instead of physical pleasure. He believed and propagated that individuals should seek knowledge and practice moral goodness to achieve the best possible life. Plato (427–347 BCE), a disciple of Socrates, later reinforced this idea. In his seminal work The Republic, he associated Eudaimonia with justice and the harmony of the soul. According to him, a soul that is not ruled by desires or emotions but by reason can drive an individual to the greatest life, full of happiness of the highest order.

However, it was Aristotle, during 384-322 BCE, who gave the most detailed and influential definition of Eudaimonia in his celebrated work, Nicomachean Ethics. In his book, he stated that eudaimonia is not “just pleasure or wealth, but a life of rational activity in accordance with virtue’’. The most vital characteristics of his thought process are:

Eudaimonia should be the highest goal of an individual’s life, instead of pleasure ...
... or wealth, because those are the means to an end and not the end goal.
To achieve Eudaimonia, an individual must develop traits, like wisdom, justice, and courage.
Virtue lies between extremes in traits and behavior, like courage comes between cowardice and recklessness.
Wisdom must be applied by the individual to make morally grounded decisions, thereby making it practically effective.
Much later, the Stoics also propagated the concept of eudaimonia, though in a slightly modified form. They held that eudaimonia is achieved through true happiness, which arises from virtue and inner peace, regardless of external circumstances. This was a little different from Aristotle, who argued that friendships and health are also important to achieve Eudaimonia. According to the Stoics, eudaimonia could be achieved through the inner light known as virtue.

Modern Interpretation of Eudaimonia
The core essence of eudaimonia remained consistent through the eras, though its interpretation underwent some refinement. Modern thinkers like Maslow and Seligman also drew from the concept, emphasizing self-actualization and positive psychology through virtue, personal growth, and inner peace, rather than mere pleasure.

So, a concept that initially included only virtue (aretē) and wisdom (phronēsis) gradually broadened its scope to encompass other elements as time progressed. From the time of ancient Greek Philosophers, it passed through to the ages of modernism, where the harmony of the soul, justice, reason, rationality, ethics, community, positive psychology, personal growth, and self-actualization were incorporated. In the current times, a discussion on the best version of an individual involves all these concepts, the foundation of which is found in Aristotle’s seminal work. Eudaimonia evolved from being a Greek philosophy into a moral and intellectual ideal that people strive to achieve or should try to achieve. Eudaimonia serves as the foundation block to modern ethics, psychology, and political theory today. It also has similarities with the Indian Yogic teachings.
