A Guide To The Districts Of Shanghai

Shanghai is one of the largest cities in the world, and home to more than 18 million people. A bustling, exciting city, it is split by the Huangpu River with the older area of Puxi to the west and the more modern Pudong to the east.
Pudong is the most modern area of Shanghai, filled to bursting with skyscrapers, and the financial heart of the city. It is situated to the east of the river Huangpu and there are endless shopping malls, designer stores, luxury hotels and museums here.
Puxi is the older area of Shanghai and it is home to many districts including The Bund. This area runs right along the Huangpu River, where you can walk along the riverbank on the newly restored riverside walkway past some fantastic traditional architecture and historic buildings.
The Puxi district is home to the French Concession, also known as The Paris of the East. This is a rich and leafy historic district and is also home to the Shanghai Stadium and several large shopping malls. Here you can take a pleasant stroll past the fantastic refurbished shikumen houses of Xintiandi.
Huangpu, also in the Puxi district, is the ...
... traditional heart of Shanghai. Here you will find the Peoples Square and Peoples Park as well as the City Hall and Shanghai Museum. The largest metro station in Shanghai is also located at Huangpu.
The historic Chinese area of Shanghai is found on the Old City, in the Puxi district. There is much to see and do here, including the beautiful wooden architecture of the buildings in this area, the City God Temple, the Yu Garden and the famous Huxingting Tea House.
The student area of Shanghai is Yangpu. Yangpu can be found in the Puxi area and houses both the distinguisded Fudan University, the Tongji University, as well as the gorgeous Gongqing Forest Park. The students lend an arty vibe to the area and the park is a great place for a summer picnic.
Those flying in to Hongqiao International Airport will find themselves in the Changning district of the Puxi area. Traditionally a quiet residential area, it is also home to the Shanghai Zoo and recent years have seen several developments, shopping and entertainment hubs spring up, particularly around Zhongshan Park. Our guide to the districts of Shanghai was written by Bonny Kominek, an experienced travel guide.
