Twelve-year-old Eon has been training to be a Dragoneye for years. He has studied Dragon Magic and worked on ancient sword-work techniques.

Both are skills needed for the ceremony at which the energy dragon of that year, the Rat Dragon, chooses the new Dragoneye apprentice. Eon is his master's last chance at success, and his friends' last hope for a life off the streets. Although he has the advantage of being the only candidate who can see 11 of the 12 dragons, he is scorned because of his crippled leg.

His challenge would be less daunting if Eon didn't have a dark secret; in fact, Eon is not a 12-year-old boy at all but is actually a 16-year-old girl named Eona, who has been posing as a boy at the request of her master, Lord Brannon, so that she could train. Because females are forbidden ...

When the time comes for the Rat Dragon to choose the next Dragoneye apprentice, there is a strange turn of events. Though Eon does everything in her power to grab the attention of the Rat Dragon, she still fails, for the Dragon chooses one of her fellow Dragoneye candidates instead, her friend Dillon. When the failed candidates line up to take their final bows, however, Eon sees the 12th dragon, the one she has never seen before.

The Mirror Dragon, the lost dragon, has finally returned and has chosen Eon to be his Dragoneye. But something happens when Eon and Mirror Dragon are to fuse, and when the Dragon searches her soul, Eon has to force herself to stop, for fear of being found out and killed.

Though Eon has not fused properly with her Dragon, she still assumes the position of the Mirror Dragoneye. But things are spiraling out of control; she does not know the Mirror Dragon's name and therefore she can not call forth her dragon and perform her duties. And during all this, Lord Ido, the Rat Dragoneye ascendant, has grown more power hungry.

He poisons Lord Brannon and continues to try take control of Eon's power. When one day Eon makes the mistake of trying to hide the fact that she is unable to call her dragon by controlling the Rat Dragon instead, Ido finds that he can control Eon when she calls upon his Dragon. And by controlling her, he finds her darkest secret and realizes that Eon is Eona. More surprises will follow.

Though the plot is definitely fantasy, Goodman uses impeccable descriptions, which makes the story seem real and makes it easy for readers to lose themselves in the continuous fictional dream. She is able to describe every aspect of setting and characters ?with great detail. It makes readers feel like they knew what "Hua" (life force) or "the Sun drug" (similar to a steroid) were before they had even picked up the book. The obstacles Eona faces and the struggles the characters go through really make for an interesting plot.

Eon: Dragoneye Reborn is the first book in a two-part series. Though the series is based on Japanese and Chinese culture, anyone who enjoys fantasy will love this book. The writing is superb, and the descriptions are almost flawless. Given the events and content of this book, it would be rated PG-13 if it were a movie, a format in which it would be easier to understand what was going on. This book was a great read that is recommended by the publisher for "grades 7 and up."
