As temperatures soar during the Indian summer, it’s lovely to simply spend time next to a lake. Imagine relaxing with gentle wind, calm waters, stunning mountains and lovely sunsets.

When it comes to Indian travel, beaches and hills usually get the most attention, yet the lakes offer a hidden treasure to discover by those who seek peace and a little adventure as well. You can choose a romantic holiday, a trip with the family or a break for one and these lake destinations are offering — and they’re easy to access by flight.

If you’re planning a trip, these are India’s most gorgeous lakes to visit. If you get organized, you could end up flying to one of these amazing places at a low price.

Dal Lake is located in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir.
Closest airport is Srinagar International Airport

1. Dal Lake is a living work of poetry. Sometimes nicknamed “Kashmir’s crown jewel,” this lake becomes a stunning scene during the warm weather of summer. Think about cruising in a shikara alongside gardens that float and sell both saffron and kahwa.

You can reach Srinagar with regular ...
... flights from large cities. Hurry and get a cheap flight, then treat yourself to the natural beauty of the land. Don’t miss out on spending a night on a houseboat to get the full enjoyment.

Must do:

Going on a shikara in the evening

The Mughal gardens Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh are close by.

You can experience Wazwan with its authentic food.

2. Naini Lake is found in Nainital (Uttarakhand).

There is an airport at Pantnagar about 70 kilometers away.

Central to Nainital, Naini Lake forms an eye shape and is surrounded by hills. With its great scenery and charming age, it’s a perfect mix. Boating, promenading on the mall and eating momos — this hill-station lake reminds me of home, but it’s always changeable.

For those coming from Delhi or Lucknow, a flight to Pantnagar is available and a scenic drive brings you to the lake.

Must do:

Discovering hills from on board a boat

Climb aboard a ropeway to visit Snow View Point.

Walk around at Tibetan Market.

3. Ladakh’s Pangong Tso

Leh Airport is the nearest airport for traveling to the region.

After Bollywood turned Pangong Lake into a celebrity, it’s become both a picture and a feeling for many. Both in India and China, the lake’s color shifts over the course of the day from blue-green to green to crimson in the right light.

Start with a flight to Leh and then acclimatize before you begin your journey. Yes, it’s remote and that’s what makes it unforgettable.

Must do:

The lake is a great location for camping.

Stargazing in a perfectly clear sky

Go and see the local village of Tangtse.

4. Lake Pichola, in the city of Udaipur (Rajasthan)

Airport near Udaipur: Maharana Pratap Airport

You’ll soon understand why Udaipur is named the “City of Lakes,” and the top jewel is Lake Pichola. Being on either side of the river, you can enjoy equally the City Palace and the Taj Lake Palace which looks like something out of a royal tale.

The city can be reached from anywhere in India by plane. Booking your ticket ahead of time will help you get a better price and see all the regal sights.

Must do:

An even-evening ride on a boat.

Check out Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas.

Fish dinner at Ambrai Ghat while you watch the lake

5. In Sikkim, Tsomgo Lake

Pakyong Airport and Bagdogra Airport are the closest to Gangtok.

Located at more than 12,000 feet, Tsomgo (or Changu) Lake is among India’s rare high-altitude lakes. In the winter, this lake is frozen, but in summer it melts and the water looks surreal blue and sits among rugged mountain ranges. Participating in a yak ride gives you a real glimpse of a fantasy tale.

Fly into Bagdogra or Pakyong and take a taxi or bus to Gangtok. You will then need to apply for permits, but everything is well worth the effort.

Must do:

Ride a yak near the lake.

Visit the Baba Mandir just nearby.

Local thukpa and momos should be on your menu.

6. Odisha’s Chilika Lake

Closest airport to the site is the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar

Chilika is not only a lake — it’s also Asia’s biggest brackish water lagoon. Because it is a biodiversity hotspot, migratory birds flock to it in summer and you may see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins there.

You can easily book a flight to Bhubaneswar because several daily flights are available. Fromigned signs, taking a road trip along the coast to visit Chilika would be great.

Must do:

Taking a boat to see dolphins

Go to Kalijai Island Temple.

Spotting birds at Nalabana Island

7. The Loktak Lake in Manipur

The nearest airport is the Imphal Airport.

Do you know what a floating lake is? Phumdis, circular floating swamps made of vegetation, are what make Loktak Lake in Manipur famous. The lake is found inside the Keibul Lamjao National Park which shelters the Sangai deer which are rarely found anywhere else.

Being offbeat is the thing that gives it charm. There are many daily flights linking Imphal with Kolkata and Guwahati. There is hidden treasure for explorers and photographers in Loktak.

Must do:

Watch the sun rise over islands out at sea

Have a look inside the fishermen’s houses on the phumdi.

Just a short way from your hotel is the INA War Museum.

Be wise about preparing for your journey and you will have a smarter journey.

You should find some peace and nature in summer, as it reflects your mind as clearly as a lake reflects the sky. Using smart flight bookings lets you make these travel plans on a limited budget.

We believe your travel adventure begins with the right ticket and, if you’re lucky, the motivation to see something off the beaten track. Thus, book a cheap flight, pack your travel bag and travel to a lakeside that reminds you of your perfect summer.

Your next fun vacation beside a lake can be yours with a quick flight.
