The Attractions Surrounding Hotels In Bruges
Bruges is the capital of the Belgian province of West Flanders, in the Flemish region of country. The city centre has been excellently well preserved from the period before motorised transport. This preservation has been recognised by UNESCO, who have declared the Old City centre a World Heritage Site. Here are a few of the things to do in Bruges.
Perhaps the best way to gain an introduction to Bruges is through one of the many canal boat tours on offer. Touring the canals opens up locations in the city that are otherwise inaccessible, and this is all achievable affordably with the expenditure of just a few Euros.
For those that prefer dry land, a thirty minute tour by horse drawn cart is a charming way to take in the sights of the Old City of Bruge for up to five passengers. Alternatively, there are plenty of options for hiring bicycles to tour the Old City, which is compact enough to also explore by foot.
In the middle of the main square in the Old City (the Grote Markt) is the most famous landmark in Bruges, the 83 m tall Belfy. Occupying the middle the Grote Markt, a climb up the 366 step climb ...
... to the top of the Belfry is not for the faint hearted (both in terms of height and quite literally). For those who are able, fantastic views of the whole city are the reward for reaching the top.
If you happen to visit Bruges in winter, you may be able to attend the Snow and Ice Sculpture festival, which runs from the end of November though to January. Some 300 tons of crystal ice and 400,000 kilos of snow are sculpted by an international team of 40 professional artists to create spectacular sculptures in a specially cooled hall on the station square of the city.
On the Burg square you''ll find the Heilige Bloed Basiliek (Basilica of the Holy Blood), a gothic church which holds a vial of what is supposedly the blood of Christ. The vial is paraded through the city every year in a large religious procession. Both the gothic chapel and the Romanesque chapel underneath are accessible to tourists.
The Groeninge Museum is the municipal museum of Bruges that holds a collection of fine art, largely created in the city between the 14th and 20th Centuries. This collection of the work of Flemish and Belgian painters is undoubtedly the most comprehensive of its kind in Europe.
The Choco-Story Museum will be a must see for fans of Belgian chocolate.
Bonny Kominek is a lottery winner who is currently touring Europe. #Pen Name was formerly a travel agent, and recommends looking at what Octopus travel has to offer when researching the options for Bruges hotels.
