Blue diamonds are available in a wide variety of colors from sky blue to deep blue. They get their gorgeous blue color from boron particles located within the diamond structure. These wonderful blue diamonds constitute to approximately 1 percent of diamonds in all the world. The blue diamonds are found in the South African mine , Cullinan.

One of the most famous diamonds in the world is The Hope diamond. This stone weights 45.52 carats, and is renowned for the bad luck it supposedly gives whoever owns it. The first known appearance of this diamonds was when it was brought all the way from India to Europe in the 17th, century. Here it was bought by King Louis XVI of France. In those days it was called the Tavernier Blue. King Louis XVI gave the diamond to his wife Queen Marie Antoinette, and both were later beheaded on the guillotine during the French Revolution. The diamond was also supposedly bad luck for its later owner the American Evelyn Walsh McLean. It is possible to see this splendid diamond now in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.

Gloria Stewart, the actress who played the role of the Rose that threw it into the sea, wore a 15 carat blue diamond to the academy awards in 1998. This blue diamond is worth $20 million.

The largest blue diamond is called the Idol's Eye, at 70 carats. Legends say that it was set as the eye in a statue in a temple in Libya, which is how it got its name. The diamond was captured during World War 2, and later was sold to May Stanton, an American. Word has it that Mrs. Stanton lived in a mansion on her own, and wore this blue diamond each day to breakfast, which she ate alone. The blue diamond was so dear to her that she did not ever want to be without it for a moment.
