San Antonio Guide

Most people know Ibiza for being the party capital of the world. With some of the biggest names in the industry running clubs, award-winning international DJs calling it home during the summer and millions of electronic music loving young things heading there on holiday it is not hard to see how it has earned this reputation.
However, there is another side to the White Isle. It is one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. The centre of the island is dominated by thick pine forests, groves of olive, fig, lemon and almond trees and harsh dry desert-like lands. The villages of this region are rarely visited, or even passed through by tourists. However, if you end up here, and you can speak Spanish, you are in for a rewarding experiencing, most notably for your belly as the food is outstanding.
The most pristine and peaceful part of the island can be found in the northeast. The waters range between emerald and turquoise; the sand is equally as perfect, white and fine and all the beaches climb to lemon and olive grove topped hills and cliffs. Even more appealing is that even in the height of summer most ...
... of them are deserted.
San Antonio on the west coast, is the island''s most popular tourist resort. Despite mass tourism, the wide, sandy bay is still beautiful and remarkably clean, testament to the city''s municipal workers. However, if you hop on a ferry, the beaches of Cala Conta, Cala Bassa and Cala August are just a few miles away and well worth the wait.
There is never a dull moment in San Antonio, whether you are young and fancy free in Ibiza to go clubbing, or a family looking for fun in the sun, San Antonio can deliver, although at different times of the year. Families should visit in May and October, whilst clubbers are best coming during July and August, or for the closing parties of the major clubs in September.
Nightlife wise, most people start at Caf? del Mar for the sunset session. Privilege is the world''s largest club, and other popular places include Space, Pacha, El Divino, Eden, Es Paradis, Amnesia and Circoloco.
If you have any energy left or inclination after all that clubbing, you must visit the Cova de Can Marca. These huge caves are spectacularly lit up and are some of the largest in the Med.
Las Salinas is one of Ibiza''s most famous landmarks. These huge salt flats have been in use for more than 2,000 years. As the salt lakes sparkle at sunset they provide one of the best camera opportunities in the world. Bonny Kominek is a freelance travel writer specialising in Mediterranean travel.
