The Delights Of Punta Cana
If you are looking for a holiday where your main activity is lazing away on a beach, seemingly constructed by leisure gods who chose the whitest, finest sand, seawater that is sheer, gleaming and warm and coconut palms to frame the whole scene, then Punta Cana is your destination.
Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is home to the largest all-inclusive resort industry in the world. Luxury, four- and five-star hotels line the beaches, of which there are many, whilst golf courses rub shoulders with the alluring waters of the Caribbean. By day you will sip rum cocktails on the beach, and by night you will sip rum cocktails at the bar.
Even despite the mass tourism, Punta Cana place is unbelievably romantic. This does mean though, that hotels and activities tend to be geared towards loved-up newlyweds or couples looking to ignite more romance into their relationship, which they inevitably do.
However, there is more to this paradisiacal island than just palm-fringed beaches and world-class golf courses. Much of which will be appealing to more than just the honeymoon crowd too.
The phase ''small but perfectly ...
... formed'' could have been inspired by the Dominica Republic. It is one of the most diverse Caribbean islands. This includes bio-diversity from virgin alpine woods, tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps, cultivated savannas, deserts and all manner of ecosystems in between, including the Caribbean''s highest and lowest points. This has therefore led to the development of a well-honed eco-tourism and adventure travel industry.
However, there is also huge cultural diversity too. The capital, Santo Domingo, is the pulsating heart of the island. Here you will find cobbled colonial streets, street art speaking droves on decades of oppression and political turmoil and cafes and bars as multi-cultural and cosmopolitan as those in Miami or St Tropez.
Never far from the big towns and cities are almost unchanged villages nestled into the countryside. The clothes have changed and the music has a heavier baseline, but otherwise you can still see fishermen hauling their catch on the coast, and women singing through day on farms akin to the plantations of old, just as they did 100 years ago.
If you are a bit of an adrenaline junkie and like to try new sports or improve your current wind control skills, then you must spend at least a day at Cabarete. The town is on the northern coast and has developed an industry on its wind; it is the major kite surfing and windsurfing destination of the island, if not the entire Caribbean. It also has some of the best sea food restaurants in the DR too. Bonny Kominek is a freelance writer with many years exotic travel experience. They recommend octopus Travel for Punta Cana hotels.
