Walks Around The Isle Of Skye

The Isle of Skye presents a fantastically varied landscape for keen walkers of all abilities. From dramatic coastal walks, to gentle rolling hills and glens, experienced walkers can also enjoy the challenging Cuillin Mountains, the most challenging range in all of Britain.
The Skye Trail is an unofficial walking route through the island and is a challenging hike aimed at experienced hillwalkers. The trail begins along the Trotternish Ridge, climbs by Cuillin itself and passes villages deserted during the Highland clearances as well as challenging coastal paths.
Those looking for a coastal walk till enjoy the Storr to Portree Coast, which is a six hour hike. The first part of the walk takes you through rough moorland, and then out onto the breathtaking cliffs down to Portree Bay. Here you will find hostels, guesthouses and camping grounds too.
Those with an interest in the natural history of Skye will love the Flodigarry Fossils Walk. This short 1 hour walk allows you to explore the beautiful coastline along Flodigarry, past the cottage once home to the local heroine Flora MacDonald, and is one of the best ...
... places in Skye for fossil hunting.
Cave of Gold at Kilmuir, also known as the Uamh Oir makes for a beautiful, secluded walk and great spot for a picnic. The walk takes around 1 to 1.5 hours across pasture land, down a steep descent to the magnificent Cave.
Those looking for a forest walk should take the Portree Forest and Bay trail. Beginning at the Aros Centre on the outskirts of Portree, this 2 hour forest walk affords great bird spotting opportunities, as well as beautiful views out over Portree Bay.
The picturesque setting of Loch Sligachan makes for a beautiful walk that is four hours long, but relatively flat, so good for beginners. This route was once the main path to Portree and follows the north shore of the Loch. You can enjoy a well deserved pint at the Sligachan pub when you complete the walk too.
Some of the most beautiful views in Skye are to be had on the 2 hour walk to Caisteal Uisdein, or Hughs Castle. This dates back to the eleventh century and provides and easy walk to its location on the low cliffs above Loch Snizort. Look out over the Loch, the Waternish peninsula, and out to the Isle of Harris on a clear day too. Our guide to the many walking opportunities around the Isle of Skye was written by Bonny Kominek, an outdoor activities guide. They recommend checking the Octopus Travel website for details of Isle of Skye hotels and travel deals for your Isle of Skye trip.
