The private security industry in the UK plays a critical role in maintaining safety and public order across venues, businesses, events, and private spaces. As the landscape of threats and responsibilities evolves, so must the skills of the professionals who protect it. That’s where the security guard refresher course becomes essential—not just as a legal necessity but as a practical tool for improving performance and readiness.
If you're working in the security sector or planning to renew your Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence, this article breaks down everything you need to know about refresher courses and why investing in an SIA door supervisor course in London could boost your career in the capital.

Why Refresher Training Is Essential in the UK Security Industry
Whether you've worked in the field for one year or ten, a refresher course helps you stay current with legal changes, new threats, and improved safety practices. As per SIA regulations, many ...
... licence holders—especially those whose certification was granted before April 2021—are required to undergo refresher training to remain eligible for renewal.
The security guard refresher course ensures that professionals continue to meet industry standards while adapting to new challenges such as terrorism awareness, enhanced conflict resolution, and modern physical intervention techniques.

What Is Covered in a Security Guard Refresher Course?
The content of the course varies slightly depending on the training provider and location but typically includes:

Updated legal knowledge and SIA rules
Terrorism threat awareness and response protocols
Conflict management techniques
Physical intervention training and safe restraint methods
Effective communication and de-escalation strategies
Incident reporting and emergency response

These modules not only help with licence renewal but also provide practical skills that can be used daily on the job.

Who Needs to Take It?
If you're a currently licensed security guard or door supervisor whose licence is approaching expiry, you’re likely required to complete a security guard refresher course. This is especially important if your last formal training took place years ago, or if you've had a gap in employment in the security sector.
Some employers may also mandate refresher training for internal compliance or insurance reasons, even if it's not yet legally required.

Online vs. In-Person Training
Due to technological advancements, many parts of the course content (especially theory-based learning) can now be delivered online. However, physical intervention and scenario-based training must still be completed in person.
