Spa Facials
At most spas, the facial is second in popularity only to massage. A good facial will clean the skin, exfoliate and add nutrients. The goal is hydration and to heal any blemishing conditions. Most skin care specialists recommend having at least four facials each year. If you are so inclined, you may have a complete facial as often as once a month. Work with your specialist to determine the best time interval for your skin. After all, you can have too much of a good thing.
The heart of a facial is cleansing. The idea is to deeply clean the pores of the skin to remove debris that prevents optimal health in the outer skin. Cleaning the pores is sometimes called extraction, and it involves removal of blackheads and whiteheads. Not everyone opts for the extraction step because it can be uncomfortable and cause some minor damage. If you think you need this, be sure that your attendant has extensive experience and knows how to perform this procedure correctly and safely.
Your aesthetician will start by determining your skin type and selecting an appropriate cleaning product. Cleaning is done gently and thoroughly ...
... by applying the cleansing product with cotton pads or sponges.
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells using steam and an abrasive product. Depending on the product, the steam may be applied directly from a steamer, or may be supplied by a soak in hot, damp towels. With a little rubbing, the abrasive scrubs away the debris, leaving fresh, living skin cells on the surface.
The next step is a mask. A creamy blend of emollients, essential oils, nutrients, water and emulsifiers is applied to the face covering all areas that were cleaned and abraded. This procedure soothes and nourishes the living tissue that was over stimulated by the preceding steps.
After a sufficient time to soak, the mask will be wiped off. Optionally, you may select toners to help close pores and encourage your skin to remoisturize itself. Other finishing products may include a wide variety of face creams chosen for your skin type or to treat any conditions you may currently have. Some spas will finish a facial with a massage.
Lastly, seek advice from your aesthetician on home skin care. You will receive expert recommendations on products suited to your skin and clear instructions on how to apply them for maximal benefit. With repeated visits and consultations, you and your skin care specialist will find exactly the right program that works for you.
