A fibre optic coupler is a type of fibre optic component that enables the redistribution of optical signals. It encompasses a wide range of fibre optic devices, including optical splitters, optical combiners, and optical coupler. A fibre optic coupler is a device that can split an optical signal from one fibre into two or more fibres, or combine an optical signal from two or more fibres into a single fibre.

An optical coupler often attenuates optical signals more than a connection or splice because the input signal is distributed among the output ports rather than sent straight from one fibre to another. For example, with a 1 x 2 fibre optic coupler, each output has less than half the power of the input signal.

Various Fibre Optic Coupler Types

A simple fibre optic coupler has N input and M output ports. N and M usually vary from 1 to 64. The number of input and output ports on the coupler vary based on its intended purpose. Fibre optic couplers can be classified according to several concepts.

Classified by Manufacturing Technologies

The ...
... technologies utilised to create optical couplers can be sophisticated and difficult to grasp. Micro-optics, fused fibre, and planar waveguide are the three most common fabrication processes.

Classified by shape

If we look at optical couplers by form, there are Y couplers, T couplers, X couplers, star couplers, and tree couplers, which divide the optical signal based on its power.

Classified by bandwidth or window

Bandwidth or Windows is also an issue to consider while selecting optical coupler types. Fibre optic couplers, regardless of port type, can be constructed for single window, dual wavelength, or wideband communications. Fibre optic couplers can also be classed as single mode or multimode.

Applications for Fibre Optic Couplers

Fibre optic couplers like 1 x 2 fibre optic coupler are used in either bus or star architectures for local area networks (LANs).

In a star network topology, stations branch off from a central hub, similar to spokes on a wheel. The star coupler allows each network device linked to it to interact with the others. Furthermore, the star coupler makes it simple to increase the number of workstations.

T-couplers are used in bus architecture to connect several stations to a single backbone cable. In a typical bus network configuration, the T coupler at each node separates a portion of the power from the bus and transports it to the associated equipment.

Tree couplers are commonly utilised in cascaded PON architectures. The initial tree coupler is directly linked to the central office's optical line terminal (OLT) port, and each output fibre is routed to a tree coupler at another location. If the signal has to be further divided, more tree couplers can be added. Of course, additional amplification or compensating modules are necessary to ensure proper gearbox.

The 1x2 Fiber Splitter also plays a major role when it comes to splitting in fiber optics.
