In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has transformed how clients, designers, and architects visualize spaces before they are built. Creating incredibly lifelike 3D renders is now easier than ever with programs like Lumion. However, additional steps are required to turn these renders into fully immersive virtual reality experiences. Let’s explore how to create VR experiences using these renderings.
1. Start with High-Quality Lumion Renders
The first and most crucial step is to create detailed and high-quality renders in Lumion. Ensure that your texturing is accurate, your lighting looks natural, and your models are clean. Take advantage of Lumion’s tools, such as Real Skies, atmospheric effects, and the materials library, to produce visually striking images. When preparing for virtual reality, it's essential to render 360° panoramic images rather than conventional static views. You can use Lumion's built-in 360 Panorama Mode to capture spherical pictures of scenes, which are ideal for VR applications.
2. Export 360 Panoramas
Once your scenes are ready, use Lumion's 360 Panorama rendering capability. ...
... Depending on the VR platform you plan to use, you can export the panoramas as still images (JPEG, PNG) or files in a VR format. Additionally, you can upload panoramas directly to websites like MyLumion, making it easy to access and share VR-ready imagery online. When exporting, choose the highest resolution settings available for optimum VR quality. Higher resolutions ensure sharper images, essential for a fully realistic virtual reality experience.
3. Choose a VR Platform
The next step is selecting a VR platform. Your options include:
- Standalone applications, such as those for Oculus Quest
- Web-based VR (like MyLumion, Kuula, or Matterport)
Platforms like MyLumion allow users to view your 360-degree panoramas directly through a VR headset or a web browser with VR capabilities if you need something quick and simple. For a more interactive experience, it is recommended to export assets from Lumion and import them into Unity or Unreal Engine. These engines enable you to develop interactive features, walkable environments, and real-time lighting adjustments.
4. Set Up for VR Viewing
After uploading or creating your panoramas or environments, you must prepare them for virtual reality viewing.
- Optimize file size to ensure seamless performance without significantly sacrificing visual fidelity.
- Test your content on various devices, such as mobile VR platforms, Oculus, and HTC Vive.
- Provide user-friendly navigation so that users can easily explore the environment and switch between scenes.
If you're using Unity or Unreal, you’ll also need to set up teleportation or joystick movement to allow users to navigate freely.

5. Deliver and Share
Finally, customize your VR experience to meet your clients' needs. This could involve using tethered VR equipment to set up a presentation at your office, developing a standalone app for VR headsets, or providing a link to a web-based VR tour. Always give clients clear instructions on how to view and interact with the virtual reality experience, especially if they are unfamiliar with the technology.
