Last weekend, I found myself scrambling to figure out the best way to get from Geelong to Avalon Airport
for an early morning flight. After trying several options over the years (some successful, others... not so much), I thought I'd share what I've learned to save you from the last-minute panic I experienced.
Living in Geelong has its perks, but when it comes to catching flights from Avalon, the transport question always pops up. Is it worth driving yourself? Should you call a taxi? Are there shuttles? Let me walk you through the options based on my experiences.
Driving Yourself
For my trip last month, I decided to drive and park at the airport. The drive itself is straightforward – just 20-25 minutes along the Princes Freeway from central Geelong. If you're coming from the Bellarine Peninsula, add another 15-20 minutes.
The parking situation at Avalon is decent, with both short and long-term options. Long-term parking set me back about $15 per day, which adds up if you're away for more than a week. The parking lot isn't huge, but ...
... I've never had trouble finding a spot, even during school holidays.
One warning though – I once nearly missed my flight because I underestimated how quickly the small terminal gets busy during peak hours. Allow extra time if you're traveling during morning or evening rush times.
Shuttle Services
My sister swears by the shuttle services. Several companies run regular shuttles between Geelong and Avalon, with fares around $20-25 per person one way. The convenience is hard to beat – they pick you up from designated spots in Geelong and drop you right at the terminal.
Last Christmas, when the entire family flew to Sydney, we took a shuttle. They were punctual and the driver even helped my mom with her oversized suitcase. The only downside? You're locked into their schedule, which might mean arriving at the airport earlier than necessary or having to rush if your preferred time isn't available.
Most shuttles require booking ahead, so this isn't a great last-minute option. I learned this the hard way when trying to book one the night before my Easter trip – everything was full.
Taxi Service
When I'm running late or traveling at odd hours, I've relied on Geelong Taxi to get me to the airport. While it's the priciest option (expect to pay $50-70 one way), it offers unmatched flexibility.
My most memorable taxi experience was two years ago when my flight was rescheduled to 6 AM. The driver showed up at my door at 4:30 AM, bright and cheerful despite the ungodly hour, and got me there with time to spare.
If you're traveling with family or splitting the fare with friends, a taxi becomes more economical and sometimes works out cheaper than individual shuttle tickets.
Public Transport
I don't recommend this option unless you're really on a budget or have plenty of time. The public transport route involves a train from Geelong to Lara and then a considerable walk or another connection. I tried this route once out of curiosity, and while it was doable, the stress wasn't worth the savings.
Asking Friends for a Lift
The classic Aussie solution – getting a mate to drive you! This has been my go-to for years. The unspoken rule is that you bring back something nice from your destination or offer to return the favor next time they travel. My friend Sarah and I have an ongoing airport drop-off exchange that's worked beautifully for five years.
Of course, this depends entirely on having willing friends with flexible schedules, so it's not always reliable.
Final Thoughts
After numerous trips, I've found that there's no single "best" option – it depends on your circumstances:

Traveling alone on a budget? The shuttle is your friend.
Family trip with lots of luggage? Driving yourself makes sense.
Business trip on the company dime? Treat yourself to a taxi.
Early morning or late night flight? A reliable taxi booking gives peace of mind.

Whatever option you choose, remember that Avalon is a smaller airport, so the whole experience tends to be less stressful than navigating Melbourne Airport. Just make sure you've planned your transport in advance – nothing ruins a trip like missing your flight before it even begins!
