Neurology specifically focuses on the nervous system. Because nerves play a fairly integral role in pain sensations, it is a fairly important part of pain management. Neurology is divvied up into multiple roles as it applies to the treatment of pain. There are neurologists who are fairly adept at diagnosing problems that may be apparent with a patient's nervous system. Neuropsychologists can then take this diagnosis and use it to formulate a plan involving psychological therapy which targets the source or cause of the pain. Neuropsychology differs from regular psychology as it has more of a physiological basis. It focuses on the brain or nervous system whereas a psychologist is generally more interested in the mind. Successful pain management may not require a neuropsychologist if the psychologist is well grounded in neuropsychological treatment - however the two terms are not interchangeable.
Pain management is heavily reliant on physical therapists in certain cases. This is more apparent where physical injury is the cause of the pain. Pain management may be a matter of strengthening the patient's body in order to properly ...
... support itself. This is specifically the case in repetitive strain injuries where the muscles become worn or start becoming the victim of poor muscle memory retention. An example of this would be if someone who has a repetitive strain injury in their hand and they find that it is now painful to use their hand for some other task because pain shoots through the nerves when doing so. Physical therapists will then have to get the patient to retrain the muscles in order to be able to utilize it in a normal fashion (a very vague example).
Pain management can require the services of all of these specialist fields in extreme cases. You may also find such professionals as anesthetists, general practitioners and surgeons also play a role in regards to pain management. Although surgery is generally only considered in extreme cases and is heavily dependent on the pain that the patient is suffering - it is still a viable means of pain management. Pain management is relevant to the medical field as a whole and is often practiced at pain clinics. Pain clinics may require a referral in order to be treated at one.
