How Diet And Oral Hygiene Affect The Success Of Root Canal Treatment?

Diet and oral hygiene has integral roles in the success of root canal treatment (RCT) and maintaining the health of the treated tooth. A balanced diet along with adequate oral hygiene are essential for the success of root canal treatment. They minimize the risk of reinfection, support healing, and ensure the long-term durability of the treated tooth.
1. Diet and its effects
Soft foods are recommended after root canal to minimize stress on the treated tooth as it would be weak and brittle. It is better to keep a soft diet until the crown is placed.
Hard or sticky foods should be avoided as these can cause cracks or dislodge temporary fillings used during the treatment process.
High sugar intake increases the risk of cavities and bacterial growth, potentially compromising the treated tooth or neighboring teeth. So sugary foods and beverages should be avoided as well.
A diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients promotes strong teeth and gums. It is recommended to maintain a healthy diet and nutrient rich foods like dairy products, leafy greens, and lean protein.
Staying well hydrated ...
... is better for oral health as water helps to remove food particles and bacteria, especially after meals.
2. Oral hygiene and its role.
Brushing and flossing along with salt water rinses are advised to maintain oral hygiene after root canal treatment. Gentle brushing should be done to prevent dislodging of temporary restorations. Flossing should be done properly in and around the treated area to remove food or bacteria that may get accumulated in the area. Saltwater rinses for several times in the first few days will help to reduce inflammation and prevent infection.
For maintaining oral hygiene for long term:
Regular brushing and flossing, with fluoridated toothpaste helps to maintain oral hygiene and strengthens enamel to prevent decay. Antibacterial mouthwash reduces bacterial load and minimizes the risk of reinfection. Smoking should be avoided for better oral health. Keeping up to date with dental exams help monitor the treated tooth and address any issues early. Routine scaling and cleaning of teeth is to be done every 6-12 months to maintain oral hygiene and adequate dental health.
