Gout is a painful type of arthritis caused by an excess buildup of uric acid in the body. It often strikes suddenly and can make even the simplest movements unbearable. If you have a family history of gout, you may be at higher risk due to genetic factors that affect how your body processes and eliminates uric acid.

Uric acid forms when the body breaks down purines, which are found in certain foods and drinks like red meat, seafood, sugary beverages, and alcohol. When levels of uric acid become too high, sharp crystals can form in the joints, triggering intense pain and inflammation. Although gout can affect any joint, it most commonly occurs in the feet and ankles.

It’s important to recognize the signs of gout so you can seek prompt treatment. Here are seven common symptoms of gout in the ankle that may indicate a flare-up.

1. Intense pain
The pain caused by gout is often described as severe and stabbing, resembling the sensation of being pricked by hot, sharp needles. This pain occurs because uric acid crystals settle into the ankle joint, causing irritation and inflammation.

During a flare-up, ...
... over-the-counter medications like colchicine or NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation. However, it’s crucial to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

2. Skin changes around the joint
A gout flare-up in the ankle can cause noticeable changes to the skin. The affected area often appears bright red and may feel warm or even hot to the touch. In some cases, the skin over the joint may look shiny due to swelling.

These visible symptoms are a sign of significant inflammation and should not be ignored. If you notice such changes, consult your healthcare provider immediately.

3. Extreme sensitivity
Gout often makes the affected ankle extremely tender and sensitive to touch. Even light pressure from clothing or bedding can cause severe discomfort. This sensitivity is one of the hallmark signs of gout and makes it difficult to perform everyday activities during a flare-up.

If you’re experiencing this kind of pain, avoid putting any weight or pressure on the ankle until you can see a doctor.

4. Swelling and stiffness
Swelling is another common symptom of gout in the ankle. The joint may appear visibly larger and feel stiff due to the buildup of fluid and inflammation. While some online images may exaggerate the swelling, the discomfort and reduced mobility are very real.

In cases of chronic or untreated gout, uric acid deposits called tophi can form, leading to more pronounced swelling and stiffness. If you notice persistent or worsening symptoms, seek medical attention to prevent long-term complications.

5. Reduced mobility
Pain, swelling, and sensitivity often make it hard to move the affected joint. During a gout attack, walking or even standing may become unbearable. Many people find it impossible to put any weight on the affected foot, making basic activities challenging.

Limited mobility caused by gout can interfere with daily life, so it’s essential to treat the condition early to prevent further discomfort.

6. Sudden and severe pain
Unlike pain from an injury, which usually has an identifiable cause, gout pain can come out of nowhere. A gout flare-up often begins suddenly and escalates quickly, with the most intense pain occurring within the first 24 hours.

This abrupt onset can make it difficult to predict or prepare for a gout attack. If you experience sudden, unexplained ankle pain, contact a healthcare provider for evaluation.

7. Pain that disrupts sleep
Gout flare-ups are notorious for striking at night, often waking sufferers from sleep with severe pain. While the exact reason for this is unclear, one theory is that cooler nighttime temperatures encourage uric acid to crystallize in the joints, particularly in areas far from the heart like the ankles and feet.

If you find yourself waking up in pain, it could be a sign of gout, and you should seek medical attention from a pain doctor to confirm the diagnosis and discuss treatment options.
