It is situated at a height of 3300 meters above the sea level in the lap of Garhwal Himalayas in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. According to the holy scriptures, it is believed that this is the same place where Lord Vishnu has meditated for ages and Maa Laxmi safeguarded him from adverse climatic conditions by taking the form of Badri tree and therefore this place got its name as Badrinath.

History behind Bardinath Temple

Badrikaashram
As it is one of the most popular temples, there are several misconceptions about the temple. According to one notion, Lord Vishnu has executed a detailed atonement here. He was deeply engrossed on his meditation and had no idea about the dangerous Bardinath weather. His wife, Goddess Laxmi, took the form of a Badri tree and stretched over him to protect him from the scorching sun. When Lord Vishnu witnessed this, he was moved by her devotion and decided to honour her by naming the place Badrikashram.
