Abu Dhabi scientists make scientific breakthrough

The world's first implantation of living cells from camel embryos was carried out in Abu Dhabi.

The laboratories of the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA), represented by the Camel Disease Centre, accredited by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), have made a scientific breakthrough by successfully growing cells from kidney, liver and muscle tissue of embryonic camels. The cells were multiplied for the first time under ideal conditions in the ADAFSA laboratories.

This achievement opens up possibilities for a wide range of applications, including diagnosis of viral diseases in camels, isolation of camel viruses, study of mechanisms of viral infection, development of improved diagnostic methods, and production of proteins and vaccines.

In addition, these cells will enable further study of the basics of cell biology of camel tissue, the interaction of drugs, antivirals and other chemicals with these cells, as well as pathological studies and advances in biotechnology. This strengthens ADAFSA's position as a scientific institution in the field of camel research and contributes to the development of medical and veterinary sciences in the UAE.

The achievement coincides with the International Year of the Camel in desert, a theme declared by the United Nations in 2024 that aims to highlight the economic and cultural value of camels in more than 90 countries.

Camels provide local communities with milk, meat and wool, serve as a means of transporting goods and people, and play a vital role in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of ending hunger, ending poverty, empowering women and protecting terrestrial ecosystems.
