It is the source of the name of the Badarinath tirtha. The Vishnu Purana mentions that Lord Vishnu arrived at Badrinath looking for serenity and solitude. His spouse, Giddess Laxmi, took the disguise of a berry tree and safeguarded him from the scorching sun while he sat in penitence in these mountains.
