In a bold move to expand its satellite communications capabilities, Apple has announced a significant partnership with Globalstar, revealed in an SEC filing on October 29, 2024. This agreement includes Apple purchasing a 20% stake in the satellite company for $400 million, in addition to a $1.1 billion prepayment to upgrade Globalstar’s satellite infrastructure.

This collaboration is not Apple’s first foray into satellite services. In 2022, Apple partnered with Globalstar to enable iPhone users to send emergency messages from remote locations without cellular service. The expanded deal will support an Extended Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) Network, with new satellites and enhanced ground support infrastructure to enable wider satellite coverage.

Globalstar will reserve 85% of its network capacity for Apple’s use, further embedding Apple into the telecommunications landscape. This move could pave the way for voice calls, messaging, and internet access in areas traditionally out of reach for cellular providers. While specific functionalities have not yet been confirmed, this partnership may enable Apple users ...
... to connect in remote or emergency situations like never before.

The investment also reflects a growing trend among tech giants, who recognize the potential of low-Earth orbit satellites for next-generation communication. As climate-related emergencies rise, satellite technology is becoming a crucial tool for public response and connectivity in underserved areas. This agreement positions Apple as a leader in satellite-enabled mobile solutions, potentially setting a trend for other companies to follow.

With Apple’s increased stake in Globalstar, the telecommunications landscape is poised for transformation, as satellite-driven solutions gain traction and reshape the possibilities for mobile connectivity.
