Google’s dominance in the search engine market, with nearly 90% of global users, has remained largely unchallenged—until now. OpenAI recently announced its entry into the search engine world with the ChatGPT search engine, a move that may alter the landscape of how we find and interact with information online. This development builds on OpenAI’s SearchGPT, a limited prototype released in July 2024, and brings new dimensions to the search experience.

OpenAI describes its ChatGPT search engine as delivering “fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources,” underscoring its commitment to both speed and credibility. The underlying technology is an optimized version of the GPT-4o model, which has been refined with user feedback collected over the past few months. The search engine’s capabilities are more dynamic than conventional search engines, blending conversational AI with real-time responses that adapt to current events, sports scores, financial markets, and more.

The ChatGPT search engine is already available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, as well as select individuals on a closed waitlist. ...
... Users can also take advantage of a Chrome extension and access the service via OpenAI’s apps or through chatgpt.com, making it accessible across multiple platforms.

A significant feature of OpenAI’s approach is its partnership with high-profile media companies, which ensures reliable, quality information from trusted sources. These partnerships span reputable names like Reddit, BuzzFeed, Associated Press, and Condé Nast, to name a few, allowing OpenAI to provide robust, reliable content and up-to-date information in the realms of news, sports, weather, and stocks.

Publishers are welcoming the ChatGPT search engine. For instance, Vox Media’s President, Pam Wasserstein, expressed enthusiasm about the platform’s potential to better showcase and attribute credible news sources. Mathias Sanchez of Axel Springer SE also pointed to OpenAI’s search as a promising opportunity for media innovation that upholds journalism’s credibility and value.

Le Monde’s CEO, Louis Dreyfus, sees AI search as a likely future standard, allowing Le Monde to explore AI-powered content while maintaining the integrity of professional journalism. OpenAI also launched SimpleQA, a factuality benchmark tool that assesses language models’ accuracy in answering direct questions, indicating the importance it places on fact-based responses.

With this launch, OpenAI’s ChatGPT search engine enters a crowded market where Google, Perplexity, and Bing are established players. However, OpenAI’s focus on integrating AI-driven conversations with real-time, high-quality information sets it apart. Whether it can shift user preference remains to be seen, but it’s clear that OpenAI is not just entering the search engine race—it’s aiming to redefine it.
