Polish Radio Station In Trouble For Replacing Journalists With Ai, Radio Chief Says Fake News

As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly penetrates diverse industries, its influence on creative sectors, such as journalism, raises profound ethical and societal questions. AI promises to boost efficiency, automate routine tasks, and facilitate innovative storytelling. Yet, its rapid adoption in creative fields has led to contentious debates about human displacement and the authenticity of content.
Radio Kraków, a well-regarded Polish broadcaster, recently sparked such debates. When its online subsidiary, OFF Radio Kraków, terminated its team of journalists, it reintroduced the platform with AI-generated “presenters.” These virtual personalities marked a pioneering move in Poland, as they took on responsibilities once held by human journalists.
The AI avatars—named “Emi,” “Kuba,” and “Alex”—were introduced to discuss a variety of topics aimed at younger listeners, from cultural trends to LGBTQ+ rights. Each avatar was carefully crafted, with distinct personalities and fictional backstories, in a bid to make them more relatable. Human journalists used AI tools to develop content for these ...
... presenters, and the station assured listeners that all scripts were verified before airing.
While this approach exemplifies AI's versatility, it has also drawn backlash. Mateusz Demski, a former journalist at OFF Radio Kraków, expressed his disapproval in an open letter, calling for public resistance against what he termed as the “AI takeover.” Demski’s concerns were echoed by many young people, resulting in a petition that quickly gained over 15,000 signatures. Critics argue that if the AI model gains traction, it could open the door to widespread job losses in the media industry.
Radio Kraków’s editor-in-chief, Marcin Pulit, attempted to dispel these fears. Pulit emphasized that the decision was not made to replace journalists with AI but was motivated by a decline in listenership, leading to a reevaluation of the station’s content strategy. He asserted that the goal was to experiment with new technology while continuing to discuss AI’s potential and limitations in media with input from professionals in the field.
Adding a layer of controversy, the station recently aired an AI-generated interview with the voice of Wisława Szymborska, a Nobel Prize-winning poet who passed away in 2012. This segment raised eyebrows among listeners who questioned the ethics of simulating a deceased poet’s voice. However, the Wisława Szymborska Foundation president, Michał Rusinek, expressed support, stating that the poet would likely have appreciated the humor in the project.
