Can Preeclampsia Lead To A High-risk Pregnancy?

Preeclampsia is a complication that occurs in pregnant women mainly after the 20th week of the completion of pregnancy. It is described as a condition of hypertension and symptoms of injury to the other body organs, particularly the liver and kidneys. Since preeclampsia is associated with high-risk pregnancy, a clear understanding of its implications is very crucial.
What is preeclampsia?
Preeclampsia can be diagnosed when a pregnant woman’s blood pressure becomes too risky, and there is a presence of protein in the urine, meaning that proteinuria is present. Some of the other signs associated with preeclampsia are headaches, blurring of vision, oedema of the face and hands, and breathlessness. The exact cause of preeclampsia is not well known, but it is assumed that it has something to do with the placenta.
Does preeclampsia cause high-risk pregnancy?
Indeed, preeclampsia is considered a cause of high-risk pregnancy ...
... since it has severe consequences on the mother’s and foetus's health. A high-risk pregnancy is a situation where the mother or the foetus, i.e. the baby, is prone to complications. Here are the following reasons why preeclampsia is attributed to high-risk pregnancies -
Effects on the baby: Preeclampsia may lead to ‘placental insufficiency’, meaning that less oxygen and nutrients are supplied to the developing fetus. Poor fetal growth is also referred to as intrauterine growth restriction, low birth weight or even preterm delivery that is delivery before the 37th week of pregnancy. There are potential health complications involving the newborn, such as respiratory diseases and developmental problems that affect growth.
Preterm delivery: This may sometimes be necessary to save the life of both the mother and the baby. In cases where preeclampsia worsens and cannot be controlled, early delivery of the baby may be recommended by a physician to prevent complications from worsening. Though preterm delivery might lead to some risks to the health of the baby, the delay in delivery might also be hazardous to the mother’s health as preeclampsia advances.
Organ damage: It can further cause damage to the mother’s organs, including the liver, kidneys, and brain, aside from primarily affecting the cardiovascular system. Severe complications may include conditions such as eclampsia and hemolysis. These complications may be life-threatening if not managed properly. However, close monitoring and specialised care can help a lot.
Future complications: Women experiencing preeclampsia might experience a high-risk pregnancy in subsequent pregnancies. Apart from that, they are at higher risk of cardiovascular diseases later in life, such as hypertension, heart disease, or stroke. Hence, doctors advise follow-up, even after the birth of the baby.
Conclusion
Preeclampsia can indeed lead to a high-risk pregnancy because complications can be implicated in both the mother and the baby. However, early detection and management can give a way out to avoiding the worst outcomes. If you suspect preeclampsia or are experiencing symptoms such as high blood pressure or swelling, seek medical care right away in order to have the best care for yourself and your baby.
